‘Game of Thrones’ Season Five Trailer: Snakes, Revenge, Beards

Acclaimed HBO fantasy drama will return for new episodes on April 12th

Feb 02, 2015

Sand Snakes, dragons, revenge plots, a haggard-looking Tyrion: It’s all there in the epic trailer for Game of Thrones Season Five, which premiered this past week during IMAX screenings of Season Four’s final two episodes, “The Watchers on the Wall” and “The Children.” While the teaser hasn’t been officially released, one quick-thinking theater attendee recorded the footage and uploaded the above clip.

“Justice has a price” is the tagline and essential theme of the trailer, which is soundtracked by a droning cover of David Bowie’s iconic “Heroes.” Other notable elements from the clip include a dramatic exchange from Littlefinger to Sansa (“There’s no justice in this world ”“ not unless we make it. Avenge them.”) and Daenerys promising “I’m not going to stop the wheel ”“ I’m going to break the wheel.”

HBO recently announced that Season Five will premiere April 12th. The season will feature a dozen new characters, including the High Sparrow (played by Brazil actor Jonathan Pryce) and Doran Martell (played by Alexander Siddig). But a trio of familiar faces ”“ Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead) and helpers Meera Reed (Ellie Kendrick) and Hodor (Kristian Nairn) ”“ will not be involved in the new episodes.

“We have a season off,” Nairn told the Australian Broadcasting Company earlier this year. “We have a year’s hiatus”¦ Solely because, I imagine, our storyline is up to the end of the books.”

After Nairn accidentally revealed the news last September, Game of Thrones showrunner David Benioff later explained that the characters’ absence will be essential to the show’s narrative.

“Even though we’re making changes to the books and adapting as necessary, we’re trying to keep the various storylines the same as the books and trying to keep them roughly [chronologically] parallel,” he said. “And last year, we caught up to the end of Bran’s storyline [in George R.R. Martin’s most recent A Song of Ice and Fire novel, A Dance with Dragons]. So if we pushed him forward this season, then he’s way ahead of where the other characters are.”
