George Mathen’s Cover As Art For Rolling Stone India
The graphic novelist picks a character from his latest work, ‘Legends of Halahala’ for his cover
Mathen is a comics artist and graphic novelist. His first novel, Moonward, published in 2009, was selected for the Angouleme Graphic Novel Festival in 2011, in France. His new book, Legends of Halahala is published by Harper Collins. Mathen is based in Bengaluru, where he works on commissioned murals and comics including his strip Empyr of Rock, which appears every month in ROLLING STONE India.
I just thought of ”˜5 Years Of Spreading Music In India’ and thought this was a comic way of looking at it. This untitled character is the announcer of all news in Legends of Halahala, and he appears in the beginning of the book, usually shouting the news. Here, he’s singing. It’s my take on ROLLING STONE as an announcer of news. There are also motifs of the number five that I’ve used ”“ on the wrist, the curves in the background going from green to black. I drew it with a pen and watercolors, adding the background later.
