Get Ready to Learn Simlish Buddy: Margot Robbie Is Producing a ‘Sims’ Movie

The Barbie star's production company is attached to a film adaptation of the hit game franchise, with Loki's Kate Herron set to direct

Margot Robbie is going from the plastic world of Barbie to the digital world of The Sims. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actress’ production company, LuckyChap, has signed on to produce a movie adaptation of the long-running computer game.

The project is still in its earliest stages, but it does have a director: Kate Herron, who helmed the Disney+ series Loki and was tapped to direct some episodes of Season Two of The Last of Us. Herron will co-write the script with Briony Redman, with whom she just co-wrote an episode of Doctor Who

It’ll be very interesting to see what form a Sims movie takes. The game is, after all, a life simulator that effectively allows players to create characters and guide them through their lives, making them fall in love, fight, go to college, start a horse ranch, become a star, overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles, whatever — you know, kind of like a movie. The franchise also has a whole bunch of “pre-made” families with their own dynamics that could serve as the basis for a film.

It’s also very easy to see a Sims movie jumping off something like Barbie, where virtual reality and reality-reality collide in weird ways. Notably, another producer signed on to The Sims film is Roy Lee, who also worked on The Lego Movie, which similarly built a story around bridging the gap between play worlds and human worlds.

That said, there’s no reason a Sims movie couldn’t embrace, say, Albert Brooks’ Real Life and Nathan Fielder’s The Rehearsal, get totally deranged with the very fabric of reality and sanity.

Ultimately, though, none of this matters compared to the real question: Will the film be in English or Simlish?
