Gig Preview: Jingle Balls Feat. Letters, Chabuk, Anthracite and Protocol

‘Expect head banging, odd time signatures and heavy breakdowns,’ says guitarist Tejas Narayan

Mumbai is set to witness a hard hitting gig on December 14th titled Jingle Balls at city-based venue Above The Habitat. The BYOB show, put together by instrumental/progressive metal band Letters, will also feature performances by fellow Mumbai acts; Hindi rap-rock group Chabuk, prog metallers Protocol and nu-metal outfit Anthracite.

Producer and Letters guitarist Tejas Narayan explains that the band have been planning a show like this for a few months due to the fact that their music has a niche audience and also mainly because they “haven’t had the best of luck” with gig opportunities. He says, “We’re pretty confident of our chances in our indie scene, provided we get the opportunity. So, we thought the best thing would be is to rope in a couple of more bands, book a place ourselves and make a night of it.”

Narayan also explains they chose the lineup of Jingle Balls based on the fact that they wanted to include young indie bands that were in the hard rock space. He says, “The only rough goal we stuck to was that they all had to be heavy or progressive bands.” Ask the guitarist what people can expect from the show and he says, “This is definitely a high energy gig, expect some head banging and heavy breakdowns. It’s all about supporting new talent from the city and embracing the distortion and odd time signatures.”

As for the event’s humorous title, the musician tells us that Letters is the sort of band that believes in all things silly and doesn’t take stuff too seriously. He says, “The credit for naming it goes to Asxem D’lean [Letters’ guitarist] and it just ended up happening in December, what better way to be festive.”
