Gig Preview: Mezcal Jazz Unit and Bickram Ghosh in Mumbai

The French band and tabla maestro will collaborate at culture hub G5A Foundation this weekend

Carrying on to strengthen a bridge that started out more than a decade ago, French jazz outift Mezcal Jazz Unit reunite with veteran tabla player Bickram Ghosh for a special show on February 10th, at Mumbai’s G5A Foundation for Contemporary Culture. The show, organized by G5A, the French Embassy in India, Institut Français and Alliance Francaise, will showcase a cross-cultural collaboration that fuses jazz and Indian classical.

Mezcal Jazz Unit comprises Christophe Azema on soprano sax, Jean-Marie Frédéric on guitar, Emmanuel de Gouvello on fretless bass and Daniel Solia on drums. The band’s music features traditional jazz melodies, high energy and a wide ranging repertoire of influences. The group met Ghosh more than a decade ago on their travels around the world and are now set to collaborate with the tabla player once again.

Ghosh is known to experiment and reinterpret music beyond genres, traversing classical, rock, new-age, fusion and more. Together, Mezcal Jazz Unit as well as Ghosh will showcase a unique blend of jazz with Indian classical music, with diverse energies and interpretations of their styles, and relive a collaboration that began quite a few moons ago.

Anuradha Parikh, Founder and Artistic Director, G5A Foundation for Contemporary Culture says, “The coming together of Bickram Ghosh and the Mezcal Jazz Unit is very exciting for us. Their music foregrounds, both, the legacy of Indian classical traditions and the rich music heritage from around the world.”  She adds, “In this we also share the vision of Bonjour India 2017-18 to support innovation, creativity and collaboration in the arts. In bringing such creative collaborations to G5A our aim is to encourage art and artists who are bold and experimental, and enlarge the community of sensitive and supportive audiences.”
