Gig Preview: No Guest List Feat. Blakc, Runt, Gumbal and TORt
The first edition of the new gig series will be held on November 23rd at Mumbai’s Above The Habitat in Khar
Mumbai is set to witness a brand new gig series on November 23rd called No Guest List at the recently-opened venue Above The Habitat. The series, put together by young event organizers Karan Yadav and Prasad Iyer, aims to encourage music lovers to heartily support the efforts put into making the show happen.
One of the biggest draws for the first edition is the live debut of Mumbai musician Siddharth Basrur’s solo project Runt, alongside performances by alt rock band Blakc, alternative/space rock band Gumbal and up-and-coming alt rock outfit TORt. Basrur says, “The first Runt EP was a completely DIY effort, and I’m really kicked that the first gig is a DIY one too. Wouldn’t have had it any other way. Folks who put these [shows] together work so hard and it’s great to see gigs like these work, because it urges more people to put themselves out there–artists and organizers alike.”
The organizers are also releasing a mixtape of new indie music in collaboration with online music property MyTape titled NGL Mixtape. Iyer says, “In the process, we discovered so many amazing acts thriving to put out fresh music, that it’s unjust we had to opt out many, considering the size and number of tracks that we wanted to go with the release.” Yadav adds, “We aim to break genre barriers with these mixtapes in a way that it helps us and promoters like us who are pushing fresh talent. And we really want people to listen to these artists.”
Adding to the DIY ethic is the BYOB policy, a rarity at gigs. Snacks and beer will be available at the venue at nominal prices as well. The organizers state that they are already planning the next edition of the gig series, which is set to take place in January 2018.
