Ever since they won The Hornbill National Rock Competition in December last year, Kolkata alternative funk rock band GingerFeet have been hard at work on releasing an EP. Initially a five-track record, slated for a February release, the EP has now taken the shape of a nine-track full-length album, High and Above: The First Wave, which is due on September 24th.

Says drummer Abhinandan Mukherjee, “After winning Hornbill, we just relaxed and took it in for a while. We were writing at least one song for every two rehearsals we had, and came up with 15 songs.” Considering they already had six songs ready even before they went to Hornbill last year, Mukherjee mentions the album will feature the first nine songs they wrote, including “Fake You,” which is about a person trying to shed his second skin and the happy-go-lucky “Am I Dreaming or What?” which was presumably written after their Hornbill victory. “There’s no negativity on this album. It’s called High and Above because we’re high on music, and above that [negative] phase in life,” says Mukherjee.

With seven songs recorded and mastered, the band heads into Kolkata’s RBK studio with producer/audio engineer Rhitabrata Kar to finish the remaining two songs following their gig at the Kolkata leg of Harley Rock Riders Season IV, along with pop rockers The Supersonics and Guwahati alt rock band Digital Suicide, on August 17th.

Mukherjee says GingerFeet will play all nine tracks from their upcoming album as part of their hour-long set at Harley Rock Riders. “We can assure you, it’s going to be a hell of a ride,” says the drummer, adding the band has more gigs planned in Kolkata and across the North East in September. They will perform in Kolkata on September 6th, 9th and 24th [the last of which will see GingerFeet launch the album], September 15th in Dibrugarh [headlining the college fest Auxesis 2013 in Dibrugarh], September 13th in Guwahati and September 17th in Dimapur. Mukherjee says the band is also plotting a nation-wide tour with Hard Rock Café in October.

GingerFeet, The Supersonics and Digital Suicide play at Harley Rock Riders Season IV at Bakstage, Kolkata on August 17th, 2013. Entry Rs 500 (inclusive of one beer). Event details here.
