If you caught Mumbai-based singer-songwriter Gini’s set at Lollapalooza India last month, then you know she was teasing a new song called “Feeka.” The pop-rock-inspired track is out now, complete with a music video that explores a college romance.
Created along with producer duo Neversober, the song is described by Gini as one of her most euphoric songs yet. And that’s saying a lot considering the Dehradun-origin artist is known for her openhearted, introspective, and nuanced takes on life, hardships, and love. She tells Rolling Stone India, “‘Feeka’ is the happiest song I’ve ever written, and honestly, I don’t know how.”
In the music video directed by filmmaker Dar Gai, Gini and her co-star – portrayed by none other than Chaar Diwaari – are college mates who catch feelings for each other, with the artist roaming the campus as an inexplicable love story blooms.
As it turns out, the first emotion that forms the crux of “Feeka” (which translates to “Dull”) was one of annoyance. She explains, “I was sitting at home one fine day in August, and thinking about how I feel really annoyed at the thought of falling in love; how can someone take up so much of your time, space and energy? How do I go from being perfectly okay on my own, to suddenly feeling like everything is ‘feeka’ without them present?”
The song flitters from dreamy acoustic pop to injecting a Nineties and early 2000s alt-rock energy reminiscent of Matchbox Twenty and Avril Lavigne. Lyrically, Gini says the song’s first verse came from taking a go at how to describe a lover’s “warm image in words.” She adds, “[Like] how they look in the morning, peacefully sleeping… okay, it sounds kinda creepy without context, but the context is that you’re in love and they’re in love, and the world feels bland and colourless without them.”
The song oscillates between what Gini sums up as the feelings of “‘Oh my god, what is happening, am I going crazy?’ and ‘Woah, I love this person, life is awesome with them.’”
“Feeka” follows Gini’s 2025 releases “Don’t Even Text,” a collab with Goa hip-hop artist Tsumyoki, her single “Naadaani,” and more.
