Singer-songwriter’s fourth single this year confronts vulnerabilities around ambition and freedom
Openhearted as ever in her songwriting, artist Gini’s new song “Aasaan” ponders the lesser-asked questions (to oneself) about pursuits, freedoms and why the journey is more important than the destination.
Gini’s fourth single this year – following “Sukoon” (which is inching towards giving the Dehradun-origin singer-songwriter her first million-streamed song on Spotify), “Chaukhat (Acoustic)” and “Ansuna” – is produced by Aditya Shukla, features guitarist Dhananjay Chhetri and was recorded by Adhithya Sivakumar at Studio Island City in Mumbai.
There’s a familiar vulnerability that Gini lays on the line on “Aasaan,” singing in an intimate yet conversational manner that’s clearly made her a draw. The song starts off minimal in terms of arrangement before bringing in string arrangements. Gini says in a statement that she wrote “Aasaan” in January, a few months before going viral on Instagram and her breakout single “Ansuna” which came out in April. “It felt like I was living out the story I’m singing in the song,” she says.
Gini adds, “When I wrote the song, I was scared of leaving home, a comfortable space, but more than anything I was afraid if I’d be able to find a home outside. The second part of ‘Aasaan’ is about the opposite; someone who’s given their all to achieve everything they have. They’re exhausted and want to go home but can’t for the fear of losing everything they’ve worked so hard to achieve and build.”
In some ways, “Aasaan” has felt “almost prophetic” whenever she sang it. Gini adds, “I could plot exactly where I was in life and have a part of the song be exactly that point. It’s a transition from a very comfortable sound to opening the doors for newer genres for me, and the writing is the truest form of gini,” she adds.
Released via the label Molfa Music and accompanied by a music video directed and produced by Bhavna Kankaria and shot by cinematographer Aarav Ramnani, “Aasaan” is the first glimpse of her upcoming album. Gini says about her next material, “After ‘Aasaan’ I’ll be experimenting with genres I haven’t done before and I can’t wait to put that music out for the world to hear. ‘Aasaan’ is part of a seven-song album I have in mind, exploring the two stories in-depth through the songs. It is the first of the seven songs and will set the story for it.”
