Diego Baliardo’s Montpellier-based band are performing in Pune, Mumbai and Bengaluru around the same time that they mark 35 years since the release of their hit song “Bamboleo”
The Gipsy Kings have taken flamenco music to all new levels and places ever since they came together in the late Seventies. Often armed to the teeth with several ace guitarists on stage, Gipsy Kings went on to experiment with rumba, salsa and pop-rock and find new audiences around the world for music from the Catalan region.
While there are a few different groups who claim usage of the name Gipsy Kings, the one featuring guitarist Diego Baliardo is in India this week for three shows as part of their ongoing global tour. Following their first show in Phoenix Market City in Pune on May 31st, Gipsy Kings by Diego Baliardo will perform at Phoenix Market City in Kurla, Mumbai on June 2nd, followed by a set at Byg Brewski in Hennur, Bengaluru on June 4th. “We have done over 20 world tours till now and sincerely we cannot say if there is a country where we have not played,” the band says in an email interview.
The group adds about performing in India, “It is always a pleasure to come to India and share our music with the Indian public.” They arrive just as Gipsy Kings’ hit song “Bamboleo” – from their self-titled, breakout 1987 album Gipsy Kings – completes 35 years since release. The song, along with several other hits, will be part of the setlist at the India shows. The band adds about the setlist, “All the songs that are known worldwide including ‘Bamboleo’ […] We will also be giving a sneak peek to our audiences of our new songs which we are launching in our next album.”
The venues have often changed for global acts like Gipsy Kings whenever they’ve visited India, from folk-fusion festivals to jazz clubs and everything in between. This time around, the India tour involves shows in two malls and a brewery. The band says, “For us the setting plays an important role while we are performing as we are a big team and have many people on the stage. Having said that, we do love the challenges that come with different settings and we look forward to each show of ours, as we can share our music with our audiences.”
It might be soon before long that Gipsy Kings are welcomed back to India, considering a new album of instrumental songs will release later this year. The band adds, “We cannot wait to share our new tunes with the world.”
