Global Artist Spotlight: Charlotte Campbell (U.K.)

The British musician opens up about her early years and what she has in store for the rest of 2018

In 2017, London singer-songwriter and street performer Charlotte Campbell released her third album, Endless Light, which features the breezy “Hello & Hi” and the mellifluous “What Did I Do?” The musician has come a long way since recording her 2013 debut record Blue Eyed Soul in her bedroom. She says, “It was really an experiment with recording at home, I never really thought anyone would listen to it but it is still on Spotify now.”

Campbell’s sophomore offering was Making Waves, released in 2015, she says, “Making Waves has some more professional recordings on there but, like my first album, I funded it through Kickstarter; which gives it a really personal feel as there was a lot of input from my supporters online into how the album was made.” One of the standout tracks on the record is the singer-songwriter’s ode to her hometown, “Streets of London,” which has references to Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square. “As a street performer here, I feel like I have claimed the city as my own and it is not just my home but also my passion and my stage,” says Campbell.

The singer-songwriter’s early experiences with music goes all the way back to when she would sing along with her grandparents — who were musicians in their own right — on long car journeys and at parties. “I always felt comfortable singing in public,” the musician says. She adds, “As I got older I took up the guitar and started writing my own songs.” On what her records mean to her now, she explains, “I am so glad I can look back on my previous work and see my journey laid out behind me.”

If you’re in and around London, there is a high chance you will catch Campbell busking near the London Eye belting out Oasis hits such as “Don’t Look Back In Anger” and “Champagne Supernova” as well as her own material. Up next, Campbell is plotting a Christmas song release this December and also has plans for an upcoming record. She says, “I am always writing so there are a lot of songs I’d like to take into the studio but that will have to wait.”
