Godless Announce Debut Album ‘States of Chaos’, Hear Volcanic Lead Single ‘Netherworld’
The Hyderabad death metallers are plotting tours in India and Europe to promote the record, set for release in November
The pandemic hasn’t slowed the march of Hyderabad death metal frontrunners Godless. While a pan-India tour and European shows were on the horizon for the band in 2020, they decided to hunker down and finish their long-awaited debut full-length album States of Chaos. With the nine-track record slated to release on November 19th, the first cut arrives with an infernal, CGI-heavy music video for “Netherworld.”
Bassist and founder Abbas Razvi says the band began working on States of Chaos right after their 2018 EP Swarm, with an eye on releasing it last year. Through the course of songwriting and finishing the album, Godless also announced that guitarist Ravi Nidamarthy and drummer Aniketh Yadav would be on their way out, making this album their final contribution. Razvi says, “Knowing that Aniketh and Ravi are working with Godless for the last time actually fueled us and them to push a lot harder and pay a lot more attention to every detail when it comes to the recording.” New Delhi drummer Vishesh Singh (from metallers like Bloodywood, Fragarak and more) has been the new entrant, even performing on the album’s track “Fluxion.”
On “Netherworld,” there’s a renewed wrecking-ball intent heard in Godless, as vocalist Kaushal L.S. taps into even more anguished growls amidst the death-thrash attack from Nidamarthy, Yadav, Razvi and guitarist Moiz Mustafa. In a description, the band says “Netherworld” is about “a person trapped in a world between worlds – slowly losing his grip on sanity, making peace with the fact that he may never break free from it.” It’s accompanied by a music video by Daniel Sharma, unraveling a claustrophobic hellscape which matches the sonics. Razvi says, “We shot this during the lockdown in Hyderabad when we had a window of four hours between 6 to 10 am and Kaushal and Moiz were still in Hyderabad to wrap up the album recording.”
Godless’ speed and intensity doesn’t relent on the track, which is a sign of what to expect from States of Chaos. They’re giving touring another shot now that things are opening up across the world, including India. “We’re working on finalizing the dates now. We plan on kicking things off on the day of the album release. We’ve been in talks with promoters in Europe and are working on that. We just don’t want to finalize anything until we’re sure we can make it there,” Razvi says.
