GOT: The Beat Makes a Bold Statement With ‘Stamp On It’

The single leads the supergroup’s first EP of the same name

What happens when you put BoA, Taeyeon and Hyoyeon of Girls’ Generation, Seulgi and Wendy of Red Velvet, and Karina and Winter of aespa in one group? Absolute magic! Back after nearly a year, K-pop supergroup GOT: The Beat have hit the ball out of the park with their latest EP Stamp On it. Fronted by the lead single of the same name, the group first debuted the song on January 1st, 2023, at the free online concert ‘SMTown Live 2023: SMCU Palace @Kwangya.’

Produced by Dem Jointz and Yoo Young Jin, “Stamp On It” is an audacious blend of R&B, hip-hop and dance, accentuating the vocal prowess the group possesses. With a heavily venturesome approach in contrast with their debut single “Step Back,” GOT: The Beat’s latest release may be overwhelming for a few listeners but manages to build some sonic cohesiveness once the chorus kicks in. 

Centered around achieving excellence in every facet of life, “Stamp On It” is an anthemic release celebrating GOT: The Beat’s unshakable confidence and power within the industry: “I want it all, smack down elegantly/ A vicious shakedown, Mona Lisa smile/ With loving eyes, I’ll destroy that orbit of yours/ You’ll turn around to a piece of me, piece of mind.” Aside from the vocalists adding soaring nuances, the track also features a groovy rap performance from Hyoyeon and Karina.  

Inspired by the caper movie concept (a subgenre of crime with its prime focus centered around executing a high-stake robbery), the music video shows the septet flaunting various pieces of jewelry, artworks, automobiles, and more from their successful heists. Sleek and engrossing, the video also features a dance break, underlining the group’s mastery over choreography. 

Stamp On It features six tracks – “Goddess Level,” “Alter Ego,” “Rose,” “Outlaw,” “Mala” and the lead single of the same name. According to a local news outlet, “Goddess Level” conveys a positive message about self-confidence whereas “Alter Ego” conveys a message about the seriousness of environmental problems.

Composed of members from each generation of K-pop, GOT: The Beat is the first sub-unit from SM Entertainment’s project ‘Girls On Top.’ Similar to what the label previously concocted with the male supergroup SuperM, GOT: The Beat brought together seven artists signed under the label – BoA, Taeyeon and Hyoyeon of Girls’ Generation, Seulgi and Wendy of Red Velvet, and Karina and Winter of aespa. Vocally robust with choreography taking centerstage, the septet effortlessly blends the two to harness compelling performances – a taste of which we first got with the sonically intense but lyrically dissatisfying release “Step Back.” Unlike SuperM, however, GOT: The Beat will feature a rotational lineup of artists.
