GOT7 Ends Contract With JYP Entertainment

The label announced the group's departure officially today after months of contract negotiations

South Korean group GOT7 have parted ways with JYP Entertainment after seven years. The group’s contract with the label comes to an end on January 19th, 2021 and–according to the company–all seven members have chosen not to renew. GOT7 debuted under JYP Entertainment on January 16th, 2014 with the track “Girls Girls Girls” and are currently one of the most prominent groups in the K-pop industry.

A statement released earlier today by JYP Entertainment says, “JYP has held thorough discussions with the GOT7 members ahead of the expiration of their exclusive contract on January 19th. As a result, both sides have agreed not to renew the contract while hoping for a fresh future… Our official relationship ends here, but JYP will sincerely cheer on the new future that the GOT7 members will advance into.”

The news of GOT7’s departure from the label first came to light after South Korean news outlets reported that the members of the group were in the middle of contract negotiations with other labels. On January 10th, media outlet Dispatch further elucidated that vocalists Jinyoung and Yugyeom were supposedly in the final stages of signing contracts with BH Entertainment and AOMG respectively, while Youngjae was allegedly in discussions with Sublime Artist Agency. Rapper Jackson Wang will continue under his own label Team Wang, while BamBam and Mark Tuan are reportedly in talks with various labels as well as possibly founding their own companies. Leader JB has allegedly been approached by two major labels as well.

Tuan took to social media soon after Dispatch’s report to send a heartfelt message to fans, stating, “The past 7 years have been the best years of my life. Nothing is coming to an end, just the beginning. The seven of us are going to continue to bring you guys the best version of us till the end. #GOT7FOREVER.” All the members also posted the same group photograph of themselves with the hashtag #GOT7FOREVER on their personal social media, assuring their fans that they plan on working together on new music in the future.

Following the end of their contract on January 19th, GOT7 will focus on solo endeavours but do not seem to plan on disbanding.
