Got7’s ‘Winter Heptagon’: How Fans Inspired its Comeback Album
‘Winter Heptagon’ is Got7’s musical diversity and versatility on display and reaffirms its legacy as one of the most influential and beloved K-pop groups
Got7 is finally back with its release of the new mini-album, Winter Heptagon, marking its much-awaited “full-group comeback” in three years. A clever reference to the seven stars that are more visible during the winter season, the album’s name encapsulates the collective brilliance of the band’s seven members—Jay B, Mark, Jackson, Jinyoung, Youngjae, BamBam, and Yugyeom. Reveals group leader Jay B, the idea for the title stemmed from the fact that Got7 had debuted in winter, making it all the more meaningful.
The nine-track Winter Heptagon is Got7’s musical diversity and versatility on display. Its lead single, “Python,” produced by BamBam, delves into the “inescapable fate of those destined to be together,” with the accompanying music video adding to this narrative—juxtaposing the members’ powerful stage presence with their carefree antics in a snowy field and reinforcing Got7’s bond and how they shine brighter when together.
“Winter Heptagon” is a collaboration between each member, giving it its sonic identity. The songs, “Smooth” and “Our Youth,” were worked on by Jackson and Youngjae, while “Remember” came from Yugyeom. With that, the album’s other contributions, including Jay B’s “Darling,” BamBam’s “Tidal Wave,” and Mark’s and Jinyoung’s “Out the Door” and “Her,” round out the album’s versatility.
Perhaps the most heartwarming track on Winter Heptagon is the fan song, “Yours Truly,” composed by Jay B with lyrics co-written by all the members. It’s a sincere expression of gratitude to the fans, whom the septet credits as their “driving force.” The song reflects Got7’s unbreakable relationship with its loyal following while expressing its appreciation and love for them.
Winter Heptagon reaffirms Got7’s legacy, in that as the seven stars alluded to in the title “Winter Heptagon” shine brighter than ever, its identity as one of the most influential and beloved K-pop groups remains firmly cemented.
The following are edited excerpts from Got7’s Q&A in the album’s official press release.
Winter Heptagon is Got7’s new album in about three years. How do you feel about making a comeback, and how have you been recently?
Mark: All of us are so happy and thrilled to make a comeback as Got7. We actually wanted to return earlier, but it took some time due to certain circumstances. We are working hard to meet our fans after such a long time, and we can’t wait to spend some fun time with them on stage.
Please introduce “Python,” the lead track of the album. Given that all the members took part in the creative process for every track, how would you define Got7’s musical identity?
Jay B: “Winter Heptagon” represents the idea that while each of us can shine on our own, we shine even brighter when we come together in winter. We came up with this idea because we actually debuted in winter. The lead track, “Python,” is characterized by hip-hop beats with minimal sounds and hooky melodies. It is a bit heavier compared to Got7’s usual bright and refreshing songs. We also reflected a lot on our musical identity and concluded that we are like chameleons, capable of adapting to any direction.
How did you plan and produce the Winter Heptagon?
Jackson: This album contains songs produced by each of the members. We have high expectations for it, as it not only features Got7’s music but also the distinctive musical colors each of us represents. I am especially grateful to our leader, who has guided us to be here together.
Following the album’s release, Got7 will appear on various music shows and stage the “Nestfest” concert. To your fans who have shown unwavering support for your musical activities, please tell them about your plans.
Jinyoung: We will do our best in every way so that we and our fans can look back on this time and the concert as “hot and happy” moments in the future. We will meet our followers through various content that we have been preparing, and we are excited for its release. We cannot wait to meet our fans soon.
This year marks the 11th anniversary of Got7’s debut. What has driven you to perform as a full group for such a long time? As you approach your 12th year in your career, do you feel any new sense of responsibility or emotions?
Youngjae: Our fans who support us are the driving force behind our continued unity. We still enjoy being together as a group, too. As I approach my 12th year in my singing career, and as a member of Got7, I always try to take responsibility for everything. The team is one, so I think taking care of and protecting myself is equivalent to taking care of and protecting the team.
As a representative global K-pop group enjoying enduring popularity, what is Got7’s next goal?
BamBam: Our next goal might be to hold stadium concerts. We want to perform in front of even more fans (Ahgase).
Please send a message to Ahgase, who has consistently sent love and support to you.
Yugyeom: Just as you have continued to send us love, we will also do our best to keep repaying your love. So, please keep your eyes on us. Ahgase, we appreciate and love you so much, and we support you, too!
