Gowri Releases Debut Album

The singer throws in humor with heartbreak in her debut album, ‘Sad Little Shoebox’

Aug 20, 2012

Since her return to Mumbai earlier this year, Gowri has been readying her debut album for release. In the works since 2010, the album titled Sad Little Shoebox, is now available on bandcamp.com. Melancholic and funny, the album is everything Gowri had promised it would be when she last spoke to ROLLING STONE INDIA.

The album has been recorded over a period of two years at music producer Chris Avinash’s Christortion studios in Bengaluru and features

sessions by percussionist Muthu Kumar and former TAAQ bassist Rzhude David. The recipient of the Resonate Music Award 2010, Gowri won studio hours, which she used to work on her debut album. “I built a rapport with Chris at the time and though I blew up my time there, I still managed to record most of my songs. He was really supportive and played lead guitar on the album as well,” says Gowri.

While Sad Little Shoebox has only eight songs, Gowri explains she has more material ready that she will record with Delhi band Jass Bastards, with whom she performs often. “We have been jamming often and have found a really nice groove. We share this incredible energy when we play live and I hope to transfer that onto an album,” says Gowri.

The album name Sad Little Shoebox is a reference to the cover art that was designed by Gowri’s friend, artist Viraj Nair. “He made a painting on an old shoebox. One day we had a fight and I tore it to pieces. Recently, I found it again and stuck it together with Fevicol,” narrates Gowri.
