The musician filed a petition to establish parental relationship in a California court last week
Grimes is taking legal action against Elon Musk over their children, according to California court records.
Last Friday, Sept. 29, Grimes — real name Claire Boucher — filed a “petition to establish parental relationship,” with Musk named as a respondent. While the specifics of Boucher’s filing are unknown, as the documents are currently unavailable online, such a petition asks a court to establish who the parents of a child are when they are not married.
A lawyer and rep for Boucher did not immediately return Rolling Stone’s requests for comment. Nor did a lawyer for Musk.
Boucher and Musk share three children, X Æ A-Xii, Exa Dark Sideræl, and Tau Techno Mechanicus. The couple first got together in 2018, but announced that they had “semi-separated” in 2021. Over the course of their relationship, they have largely tried to keep news about their children secret: Exa Dark (also known as “Y”) was born via surrogate a year before she was announced, and Techno Mechanicus, was only just revealed in Walter Isaacson’s new biography of Musk.
The parental relationship petition notably comes several weeks after Grimes wrote in a since-deleted tweet that she was being prevented from seeing one of her kids. The post was directed at Isaacson and referenced Shivon Zilis, an executive at Musk’s company Neuralink, who bore Musk’s twins in 2021 (in the tweet, Boucher also seemed to suggest she was at one point unaware of the twins’ existence).
“Tell Shivon to unblock me and tell Elon to let me see my son or plz respond to my lawyer,” Boucher wrote. “I have never even been allowed to see a photo of these children until this moment, despite the situation utterly ripping my family apart.”
The following day, Boucher said she finally spoke with Zilis, saying, “This is not her fault, plz don’t be angry at her! We respect each other a lot and we’re excited to become friends and have the kids grow up together.”
She continued: “As u can imagine, that was a very gut level reaction to a thing that has been very hard for me. Communication about the twins wasn’t handled super well in the past, but I now totally understand what happened and totally forgive the situation. Women are so often pitted against each other. Speaking with Shivon, it’s very evident she’s an amazing human and we both just want what’s best for our kids. I wish I could show u how cute little Techno is but my priority rn is keeping my babies out of the public eye.”
