Delhi Artist Gurman’s ‘Aaja Mera Banke’ is a Nuanced Love Song

The singer teamed up with lyricist-composer Genav Luthra and co-composer Kinshu for the release on Bajao Records, the label founded by artist Kanika Kapoor

After a few years of predominantly being known as a covers singer, Gurugram-origin artist Gurman Singh (who goes by his first name) has leaped into writing and releasing his own music, starting with “Aaja Mera Banke,” a song about when love gradually becomes one-sided.

Released via Bajao Records – the label founded by singer Kanika Kapoor – Gurman says his previous attempts at building an audience just through covers proved difficult. “After spending lakhs of rupees in making my studio and releasing covers on Instagram for three years, I just received failure in return. My voice was not being recognized even after working hard day and night,” the 17-year-old adds.

Taking a break from social media to focus on honing skills like songwriting, composing, production and multiple instruments, Gurman emerged six months later and refixed indie favorite Anuv Jain’s song “Husn” with his own lyrics and voice in December last year. The video now has 1.2 million views on Instagram and set Gurman on the path to more creative covers and interpretations of hit songs.

With that kind of attention, it was only a matter of time before he was approached by Bajao Records. Coincidentally, Gurman says he was ready to upload his first-ever original song to social media when he received an email from the label to sing “Aaja Mera Banke.” He adds, “It was all done within a week! I believe destiny played a big part in it. Honestly, Bajao Records changed my destiny and the rest is history.”

Singing since the age of six, Gurman says he’s worked on “developing a type of genre that suits me, my voice and my style.” While he’s open to trying other genres, “Aaja Mera Banke” marks a tender love ballad with pop hooks, a bit of production and acoustic guitar at the center of it along with Gurman’s impassioned but measured vocals.

Up next, there’s more music and Gurman credits his label’s founder Kapoor as a “massive driving force” in terms of giving him the platform and the reach. “I’m thrilled to say that there are going to be massive releases via Bajao Records and hopefully, some independent ones as well. Looking forward to seeing what 2024 has in store for me because it’s off to a good start so far.”
