No Doubt singer reteams with director Sophie Muller for first new solo music video in eight years
“I’m really into pink right now, which is weird because I did pink back in the day with my hair. Each time I’m cocooned, each time I transform into a new chapter, I do pink,” Gwen Stefani said recently during a New York Fashion Week interview. After breaking out of her solo career’s eight-year hibernation with her synth-driven new single “Baby Don’t Lie,” Stefani has shared that track’s colorful music video. A play on The Wizard of Oz, the video stars a wildly polygonal yellow brick road, an army of dancers and mountains of reoccurring Stefani patterns like bold black-and-white stripes, houndstooth and plenty of pink.
In the eye-popping video, Stefani and her dancers are shown with bright pink Beats by Dre headphones around her neck while using the Beats Music app, which makes sense given that Instagram photo of her and Dr. Dre flying to Apple’s iPhone 6 event. (The singer also uses a gold iPhone in the video, so don’t expect to see any more Stefani-narrated HTC Windows commercials.)
Sophie Muller and Weirdcore directed the “Baby Don’t Lie” video. A longtime collaborator of Stefani’s, Muller has helmed seven No Doubt videos ”“ starting with “Don’t Speak” in 1996 ”“ plus two of the band’s concert films and now six Stefani music videos.
“Baby Don’t Lie” is Stefani’s first new solo track in eight years, and the singer co-wrote the cut with producers Benny Blanco, Ryan Tedder and Noel Zancanella. The single is the first from the singer’s as-yet-untitled third solo album, the long-awaited follow-up to 2006’s The Sweet Escape.
While few details about the LP have been announced, we do know that Stefani’s fellow Voice judge Pharrell Williams worked on some tracks and that Blanco executive produced the album. In a radio interview with Los Angeles’ 104.3 MyFM, Stefani also accidentally revealed that Charli XCX and Calvin Harris also worked on the new album, but that the disc isn’t quite finished yet.
Keeping it in The Voice family, Stefani visited Carson Daly’s radio show on Monday to premiere a snippet of another new track titled “Spark the Fire,” Beacon Street reports. No release date for Stefani’s third LP has been announced.
