After taking the desi hip-hop scene by storm in 2017 with his breakout hit “Suno,” the only way for New Delhi-based rapper Prabhdeep Singh aka Prabh Deep to go was up. His lyricism stems from observations he made while growing up in Tilak Nagar and the honesty with which it is all addressed granted him a powerful fanbase. “I don’t force myself to write about particular issues,” Singh explained in an interview with Rolling Stone India in 2017. “Those social issues are issues which I’ve experienced myself.”
After signing with New Delhi-based Indian hip-hop label Azadi Records, Singh made waves in the Indian music industry with the release of his debut LP Class-Sikh in 2017. The album’s frank confrontation of social and political issues in India including drug addiction and unemployment established the rapper as the voice of New Delhi’s youth. Singh’s latest EP King sees the rapper take on the role of producer, delivering smoother pop hooks blended with deep bass and synth in collaboration with producers Hashbass & Archit Anand. The subject matter is familiar, diving headfirst into politics and confidence in his own talent.
Prabh Deep will be performing live at Haq Se Hindustan, a concert presented by digital media firm Qyuki and Rolling Stone India on November 14th at Famous Studios in Mumbai. Get tickets here.
