“Spoilers seem such a mean-spirited thing to do.” That’s a warning from Harry Potter author JK Rowling. And she’s right. So you’ll learn no secrets here, especially the identity of the Half-Blood Prince, though it’s there in the book. This is the sixth film in the Potter series. The seventh and last book (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) will be halved to make two cinematic pots of gold for next year and the year after that. Luckily, the original film cast hasn’t yet aged into decrepitude. It’ll be a kick to watch Daniel Radcliffe’s Harry, Emma Watson’s Hermione and Rupert Grint’s Ron as their hormones rage on camera. For my money, the Potter films hit a peak in 2004 with Alfonso Cuarón’s Prisoner of Azkaban, which defrosted Rowling’s cool with ardent sensuality. But as director David Yates proved with 2007’s Order of the Phoenix, he’s the go-to guy for bringing out the tale’s encroaching darkness.
