Hashback Hashish To Play At South By Southwest Festival 2013

Delhi-based electronica DJ and producer is also releasing new material on multiple international labels

Nov 29, 2012

Ashish Sachan aka Hashback Hashish

Ashish Sachan, who composes techno, electronica and minimalist music under the name Hashback Hashish got signed on to Berlin-based label Plastik.FM, Ireland’s Nice & Nasty and Robotica Records in Serbia solely after being contacted through his SoundCloud profile. Armed with remix EPs and original material due for release in the coming months, Sachan received another international push ”“ the chance to perform at American film and music festival South By Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas in March next year.

Unlike the record deals, snagging the SXSW gig involved being more proactive for Sachan. But even then, the DJ says SXSW “has happened in the most freakishly-simple manner.” Adds Sachan, “I submitted my music to them during their last call for entries process, and then immediately proceeded to forget all about it. What came next was an email about two months ago, congratulating and inviting me to showcase at the festival next year.”

The DJ started out learning music production in 2004 driven by his keen interest in electronica. But it was only in 2008 that he began performing under the name of Hashback Hashish. In 2010, he began working on his first full-length LP The Grinning, Naked Bunch that finally released in April this year. Sachan has been releasing several singles since including “Blow,” “Daikaiju,” and “Starlight” as well as remixes EPs like Crystalline Nightmares and Lather, Rinse, Repeat.

Future releases include Bruce Banner EP, the single “Babe,” and Blow Remixes EP. Sachan says the general sound jumps between minimalistic soundscapes, hardcore techno and some catchy electronica. The two remixes of “Lather, Rinse, Repeat” on the EP by Swedish techno experimental duo Damolh33 is a darker mix, says Sachan, and Russian progressive house producer Ewan Rill’s mix has a distinct dance vibe.

For his set at SXSW, Sachan says, “I plan to use this opportunity to promote my original work, along with remixes of my songs by artists I cover. I’m hoping that people who appreciate new sounds have a good time while I do my own thing.”

Delhi acts such as alt rockers Menwhopause [2007], veterans Parikrama and electronica act B.L.O.T [2011], jazz/rock guitarist Ashutosh Pathak and Carnatic vocal duo Darshana & Sowmya [2009] have previously performed at SXSW.

Hashback Hashish performs at SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas on March 13, 2013. Details here.
