Growing up in Gangtok, Sikkim, singer-songwriter Aabishkar Thatal’s first exposure to music was through his father’s collection of English, Hindi and Nepali songs played on road trips. At the age of 11, Thatal picked up the piano and soon began writing his own songs during his teen years. He says, “Writing songs also comes from my love and appreciation of literature and poetry.”

Now, Thatal is out with his third single, the delicate yet harmonious “Nau Daanda Paari,” the first glimpse into his upcoming EP Hiunda.

“Nau Daanda Paari” translates to “nine hills apart” and according to the artist, the track talks about love that keeps a long-distance relationship strong. He says, “It is more like a lover singing to their significant other who is in a faraway land, probably waiting for them to return. I believe love is strong, and this song is about that tender strength that love blesses a person with.”

The song opens with gentle acoustic guitar plucking and light piano motifs that set the tone, while Thatal’s calming voice fills the space in between the notes. The track does pick up with some deft percussion work as well as silky electric guitar melodies too. Overall, “Nau Daanda Paari” is a beautiful concoction of a ballad-meets-pop song built on mature lyricism.

Thatal tracked “Nau Daanda Paari” at Gangtok’s Record Room Studio, where he is also currently in the midst of production work for Hiunda. The title of the upcoming EP translates to “winter” in English and is set to include five songs. The singer-songwriter says, “Winter is my favorite season of the year. I love the cold that blows in the wind and flows in the water. Ever since I was a child, I’d wait for the winter season all through the year. All the songs in the EP are written during or at the onset of the season.” He adds, “The EP does not talk about the winter season, but it talks about how it made me feel during different winters of my life.”
