The Bengaluru band’s new record comes after last year’s sophomore single ‘Save Me’
After releasing their dynamic second single “Save Me” in 2021, Bengaluru alt-rockers Over The Edge spent a lot of time sifting through demos and ideas they had. The band – comprising vocalists-guitarists Dhanush K and Hanan Mir as well as producer Aditya Meher – decided to complete and compile those ideas into their debut EP themed around the thought of love. Last month, they dropped the crushing and dreamy five-track offering, If I Stay, Would You Run Away?
Work on the record began in January this year. At the time, both Dhanush and Meher spoke to each other about looking to move away from the sound they had on their previously released singles. Dhanush says, “The dreamy sounds of the Eighties fit well into the thoughts of love, the dark side of life and hope. Eventually, it set the tone for what we were creating as artists.” Meher adds, “The sound is dynamic, so to speak, ranging from ambient to transient rock ballads. [There are also] subtle hints of industrial and dreamy synths, the timber harmonics of the Eighties, grungy guitar overtones and washy drums with aggressive yet soulful vocals.”
If I Stay, Would You Run Away? kicks off with the punk rock-fuelled track “This Is How It Starts” before shifting to the moody “3/4.” The mid-record track is the dreamy “Retro Heartbreak” while the penultimate song is the Pink Floyd-influenced eponymous offering. The EP closes with the indie-rock sounding “Sapphire.” Over The Edge offer plenty when it comes to soundscapes, vocal performances, instrumentation as well as dynamics across the five tracks.
Although the band are now planning on taking a break from writing new material, they are gearing up to release music videos as well as play live to help promote the new EP. However, the group also inform us that they do have a full-length album in store for next year.
