On his first release since 2017, Bengaluru-based producer-singer Cosmic Attic aka Sharath Narayan takes the long route, with his new single “Comet” clocking in at nearly seven minutes.

The dreamy track sees Cosmic Attic – also frontman of rock band Black Letters – traverse multiple sonic movements. There’s sung parts familiar to fans of Black Letters, choppy beats, layers of bright synth over effect-heavy vocals and it closes with a peppy vocal loop over swelling beats. Narayan says the track’s initial idea was conceived in a dream.

He goes on to describe the dream in a press note, saying, “I met a childhood friend of mine, and she invited me to join her on a trip to a comet. I remember how I felt while I was dreaming, it was like we were making a deal, I had to take a shot of something, and I could not say no to her, for some reason. Maybe because I was happy to see her after so long, I was caught up in recollecting the memories we shared.” In the dream, Narayan says he reminisced about how they went for Carnatic vocal lessons together and used to walk back home. He adds, “Apart from the whole dream aspect of it, around the time I wrote this song, I wanted to go see my childhood friends and teachers I was close to, maybe that came out as a dream. Iʼll probably go see a few of them after this lockdown.”

As Cosmic Attic, Narayan has so far released an EP called Climb and the single “Fake Massage” in 2016, and singles “Brew” and “Close Poles” in 2017. “Comet” is released via Overfeed Records, a label started by Narayan’s Black Letters bandmates, Akash Chacko and Sarang Menon.
