Compton rapper spends 18 seconds obsessing over ex on band's new single
Maroon 5 revealed the secret weapon on new single “Don’t Wanna Know” is rapper Kendrick Lamar. The Compton rapper is heard on a fleeting verse of the new song the band dropped late Tuesday night.
The breezy, Benny Blanco-produced track features Adam Levine dealing with his jealousy after having a former flame’s love life shoved in his face on social media and the press. “I don’t wanna know, know, know/ Who’s taking you home, home, home/ I’m loving you so, so, so/ The way I used to love you,” Levine sings. The song pushes Maroon 5 toward the electronic pop sound they’ve been experimenting with in recent years, as evidenced by the group’s 2015 V bonus track “This Summer’s Gonna Hurt.”
Lamar’s verse also deals with being envious of an ex’s social media presence. No more ‘please stop’/ No more hashtag #BoodUp screenshots/ No more tryin’ make me jealous on your birthday,” Lamar raps during his 18-second cameo. “Matter fact, never mind, we’ll let the past be/ May be his right now, but your body’s still me.”
The music video for “Don’t Wanna Know” premieres this Friday on Today. Maroon 5 are also scheduled to give the track its television debut on a November 3rd episode of Ellen.
