True to the way creative minds often function, Chennai singer-songwriter Kevin Fernando found himself gravitating towards finishing a new song idea rather than his previously penned material. “I’ll Find My Way To You Tomorrow,” a gentle ditty about love, was written last month when the artist found himself singing to a friend who was unwell. “She said my songs were very comforting and I always wanted my music to be very personal for each person listening,” he adds.
The song gets a push via Spotify’s ongoing spotlight series RADAR, which has previously featured everyone from fellow Chennai artist Mali to New Delhi singer-songwriter Sanjeeta Bhattacharya, singer-songwriter/producer Dhruv Visvanath, jazz/funk group The Revisit Project and more. Fernando says, “I got a call from Spotify for RADAR and they asked me if I have a song to release by the end of January.” With regard to getting picked by Spotify — something that has led to his song being on an editorial playlist even in Mexico and has so far accrued over 20,000 streams — the artist chalks it down to his nagging personality. “I’m very craving as a person, when it comes to my music. I also got ideas from their masterclass and I pretty much use Spotify like a social media platform,” he adds.
Fernando and producer Ashwin Vinayagamoorthy took four days to record “I’ll Find My Way To You Tomorrow” and kept things as simple as possible, although they did end up adding a guitar solo that the singer-songwriter decided to keep as a surprise element of sorts. “I even wrote the lyrics on the way to the studio,” Fernando adds with a laugh. In addition to this song and his previous glimmering pop single turn on “Foxy,” there’s a new track potentially set for release in April. Fernando adds, “There’s two sides to my music, the produced pop stuff and the more grassroots, acoustic songs. But there will always be surprise elements in every song I release, because I want to pique people’s interest when they hear my music.”
