Hear Mallika Mehta’s Charming New Single ‘Way Too Long’

The track is the first release since the Mumbai singer-songwriter’s 2019 debut EP ‘Evolve: The Story of Her’

Mumbai singer-songwriter Mallika Mehta didn’t waste much time working on new music after her four-track debut EP Evolve: The Story of Her released last year. While carving out fresh tunes, the musician also began working on her chops as a keyboardist. “I wanted to start playing it [keyboard] not only to accompany myself to write songs but also for gigs,” she says. Only eight months on since the EP dropped, Mehta is now out with her latest offering, the endearing “Way Too Long.”

According to Mehta, she penned the new track in less than an hour by using some of the tips she learned while at New York University in 2019. “The first phrase that came to me was ‘way too long’ and so I stuck with it and began ideating and noting down things that take way too long to be said or done.” The song includes a clever vocal hook by the singer while lush instrumentation is built around Mehta’s voice creating a charming and relaxing listen.

The musician explains that the lyrics portray the emotion of regret and describe flaws in people who have feelings for one another but “take things for granted by not calling or expressing their feelings in time.” Mehta adds, “One of the strongest lines in the song talks about what actually hurts them the most is knowing that they will be okay, in spite of not being together which is just a bittersweet acceptance.”

Mehta worked with producer Shivang Arora and states that it was a collaborative process when it came to knowing exactly what they wanted to achieve. “I wrote the lyrics and composed the melody of the song and Shivang composed the music,” she says. “Way Too Long” was then mixed and mastered by U.S.-based Rob Nolfe.

During the lockdown, Mehta has been upping her social media game by doing Instagram takeovers as well as brushing up on her keyboard skills. Next, the singer-songwriter has a Hindi song in the works and also a couple of collaborations in the pipeline. She says, “Can’t wait for the situation to get better and for stage shows to begin, I guess I miss that the most.”
