Hear Mumbai Singer-Songwriter Banat’s Enchanting New Song ‘Flish’

Produced by Vishal J. Singh, the title track off her upcoming EP marks a shift in sound

Mumbai singer-songwriter Banat Kaur Bagga (who goes by her first name as an artist) has often picked the acoustic guitar as her go-to instrument for composing as well as performing for the last three or four years. But Banat tells us she’s “always been a keys person” and if you saw her behind the keyboard at previous shows, it marked a steady change in perspective for the artist.

Her latest release “Flish” is a somber, eerie and piano-led offering that was only the second track she’d ever written on keys. “I’m a much better composer on the piano than I’ll ever be on the guitars, in my opinion,” she says. The song, which delves into the whimsical world of a fly and a fish envious of each other’s lives, is what Banat describes as “inspired by the most basic premise of the grass being greener on the other side.” Produced by Mumbai-based Vishal J. Singh,  Banat says they exchanged references and added ambient elements that recall a nature soundscape.

While the song was written two years ago, the video was created by Mumbai-based graphic designer and illustrator Drishali Motwani entirely during lockdown. Banat says of the visuals, “The universe of ‘Flish’ as we see in the video is a symbolic representation of how I feel at home which I think, now more than ever, people will relate to.”

The song is the first release off an upcoming five-track EP, also called Flish. While she’s written on piano, there are three guitar-based tracks which also features Banat’s band – bassist Yash Rohra and drummer Siddhi Shah. Banat adds, “The plan is to release the entire EP next. We’ve also shot another music video, which will be released post the EP.”
