Tune sets up drama on new album 'Drones'
Muse turn the tumultuous end of a relationship into a funky pop song on “Dead Inside,” the latest track from their upcoming LP, Drones. Frontman Matt Bellamy sings the chorus with his bandmates as a shocking, gang-vocal stinger to bass-heavy verses like, “I see magic in your eyes/on the outside you’re ablaze and alive, but you’re dead inside.”
It’s a story song with a twist at the end that dovetails into the tale Muse are weaving on Drones. “This is where the story of the album begins, where the protagonist loses hope and becomes ‘Dead Inside,’ therefore vulnerable to the dark forces introduced in ‘Psycho’ and which ensue over the next few songs on the album, before eventually defecting, revolting and overcoming these dark forces later in the story,” Bellamy explained in a statement.
Previously, Muse released the Drones song “Psycho” and made an accompanying avant-garde lyric video. Similarly, the band made a trippy lyric clip ”” with close-ups on topless woman writhing in Rorschach mirror images as the words appear around her ”” for “Dead Inside,” the record’s first official single.
When the band announced the new record in March, Bellamy explained the story behind Drones. “To me, ‘Drones’ are metaphorical psychopaths which enable psychopathic behavior with no recourse,” Bellamy wrote in a Twitter Q&A. “The world is run by Drones utilizing Drones to turn us all into Drones. Drones explores the journey of a human, from their abandonment and loss of hope, to their indoctrination by the system to be a human drone, to their eventual defection from their oppressors.”
The record, and whatever inherent hope it holds within, is due out June 8th.
