The Mumbai-based singer-producer showcases balmy vocals over brooding sonic textures
New Delhi-bred and Mumbai-based singer-producer Anju Sreekanth aka Taceō admits that she hails from a family who weren’t music enthusiasts while she was growing up. “I feel music got to me really late,” she says. After withdrawing from her IIT coaching classes, Sreekanth enrolled herself at New Delhi’s Performers Collective School of Music followed by a stint at Global Music Institute in Greater Noida. “It [music school] coerced me out of my comfort zone and showed me what it takes to actually become a musician.”
Last month, Sreekanth released her debut single, the calming “We.” The artist produced the music for the song in 2020 and informs us that initially, she didn’t plan on having vocals on it. “It was just a random set of chords and samples coming together,” she says. It wasn’t until a year later that Sreekanth decided to write lyrics for the tune. She says, “I came across something that made me feel what this song can make one feel like.”
“We” includes slow and moody production that complements Taceō’s mild vocals perfectly. Talking about the track in-depth, the singer-producer says, “Capturing the unique feeling of love, it is a mellow yet weirdly euphoric song. The lyrics talk about the ‘too good to be true’ feeling of having found that thing or person that possesses the power to either hold your mind and soul in sync or break it apart altogether.”
Next on the horizon, Taceō plans on working on an EP with remixes of “We” as well as a follow-up single for later this year.
