After releasing her debut EP Khoyi Rahun in 2020, Madhya Pradesh-bred, Mumbai-based singer-songwriter Trishita Recs (who goes by her first name) had a rough battle with COVID-19 and dysthymia. She says, “It didn’t allow me to be my most productive self.” However, Trishita was still able to release her single “Sab Ruk Sa Gaya,” drop a music video for “Tum Mujhe Jaante Ho” off Khoyi Rahun, and even made her debut as a playback singer on the Netflix series Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein with the song “Humra Sajaniya.”

Now, the artist is out with her latest release, the poignant track “Teri Rooh.” Although Trishita had the basic framework and melody for the song down last August, it wasn’t until she made a trip to Goa that she was struck with inspiration for the lyrics. She says, “We were literally sitting in this torn-down castle kind of a structure by the beach somewhere in south Goa. Later the same year, I happened to find my muse in a delightful stranger, and I was able to complete the rest of the song based on my relationship with him.”

The singer-songwriter adds, “The lyrics are a subtle coming together of Hindi and Urdu. I have tried to project my thoughts through the writing, but I have also tried to keep the approach as abstract as possible so that it continues to be open to interpretation.”

Sonically, the track includes delicate guitar plucking, a relaxed production touch, and Trishita’s hauntingly beautiful vocals that evoke a sense of escapism. “I have been listening to a lot of acoustic soul lately and I am really interested in trying things in that genre. This was my very first attempt. Even in the forthcoming future, I want the soundscape of my songs to place my vocals at the forefront,” says Trishita.

The artist tapped her former guitar tutor, Mumbai-based Ralcus Aguiar (of erstwhile blues-rockers The Tripp) to play on the track and tells us that “he [Aguiar] added his own beautiful flavor and inputs to the track, and I loved it.” Bassist Akashdeep Gogoi handles the low end on the song, while sound engineer Tarun Sharma mixed it.

With collaborations as well as a deluxe edition of her debut EP Khoyi Rahun in the works, Trishita plans on quitting her day job and making music her full-time gig. “[I want] to take my songs live to my audience,” she says.
