Lucknow-bred hip-hop artist Panther has been fascinated with writing ever since his childhood. After slowly learning the art of freestyling as well as being influenced by hip-hop, he turned his rhymes into songs. With a handful of singles under his belt, the now New Delhi-based rapper is out with his debut five-track EP Why.
Initially not one keen to put a record together, Panther felt that it was too soon for him to have done it. He says, “Pre-lockdown, I went through a severe heartbreak which totally broke me down. I was going through that whole mental trauma, but I just wanted to burst out.” Questioning the events that transpired in his life, the artist took to music to express himself. “That whole process led me to make this EP.”
The EP opens the sarcastic “Khwaab” before Panther spits bars on the moody piano-driven “Tanha.” He says, “It sets the mood for some serious conversation.” We then hear the fluid “Tere Bin” which incorporates “honesty put in the words” and the penultimate track, the hard-hitting “Barsaate.” The record closes with the slow-paced title track wherein Panther leaves us with unanswered questions.
Why was recorded at Panther’s New Delhi home studio and with the help of sound engineer Ankee while the songs were produced by various artists such as Veegi (“Khwaab”), Nik BeatS (“Tanha”) and Snob (“Tere Bin,” “Barsaate” and “Why”). Panther says, “They have all put a lot of creativity in production.” As the rapper uses social media as his best marketing tool to promote the EP, he’s also prepping to release a few music videos. In the works are also fresh singles, he says, “Just loads of new music.”
