Hits Of Tomorrow – A Weekly Rundown Of The “Should-Be” Hits

Beyoncé’s first single “Break My Soul” released this week and while the diva tries to infuse some life back onto the charts with her 90’s house-inspired track, the single lacks anything particularly noteworthy. As it turns out though, there are a large number of huge singles releases by big acts trying to quickly capture the 1-2 missteps of Drake and Beyoncé. First out of the gate is Lil Nas X who joins forces with YoungBoy Never Broke Again for a BET-diss track that’s likely to catapult the young rappers to the top of the charts. Taylor Swift is also back, this time with her single “Carolina” appearing on the “Where The Crawdads Sing” original soundtrack. Finally the ever-reliable Imagine Dragons are back with “Sharks”, another single likely to become a mainstay on the charts. Of course, here we cover the tracks that aren’t as instantly likely to make the same level of impact and need that nudge. Without further ado, here’s this week’s Hits Of Tomorrow.

pogo – bbno$, Diplo

After a killer remix of bbno$’s hit “Edamame”, Diplo comes together with the Canadian artist for a summertime double-entendre extraordinaire with “pogo”. The track is as silly as one has grown to expect from the rapper-singer but with Diplo handling production, the single now bops like never before. It would be a summertime crime for the track not to blaze the charts and become a streaming staple!

BARRICADES – Netsky, Rita Ora

Nearly a decade after breaking onto the scene with DJ Fresh on “Hot Right Now”, Rita Ora continues to find her best voice around break beats. This time around Belgian DJ Netsky takes the ranks with production by veterans Stargate. The track is perfect for the season and this time lyrically the song offers a bit more heft than Ora’s other recent collaborations, making for a more ethereal connection and hopefully summertime anthem.

CRACKER ISLAND – Gorillaz, Thundercat

After previewing the track live in April, Gorillaz officially release their collaboration with Thundercat on the dance bop “Cracker Island”. The track is everything we’ve grown to love about the band and Thundercat’s voice interspersed with Damon Albarn takes the track to a whole new funkier level. The band hasn’t really had a breakthrough hit in a number of years but with this single, they stand the strong chance of having a breakout again, much deserved for one of the consistently most creative acts we have in music.

<maybe> it’s my fault – WILLOW

I’ll be honest, it took me a while to get into the pop-punk world of Willow but her recent evolution with stellar collaborations with Camila Cabello and PinkPantheress has me seeing the artist in a different light. “<maybe> it’s my fault” works because there is a layer of honesty here that makes the vocals feel all the more powerful and true. This is definitely Willow’s wheelhouse and there is absolutely no reason why the track shouldn’t become a regular on the Top 40.

Lost Me – Giveon

With the release of his debut album “Give Or Take” (finally!), Giveon gives us a lot more than we probably could have asked for with countless jams that keep us tuned in. It’s his latest single though “Lost Me” that perhaps best encapsulates the emotions not only we feel but the artist exudes that makes him such a shining bright star. Here’s hoping radio and in particular Top 40 leave the door open for the singer and give this track as much love as they give him last year with “Heartbreak Anniversary” or even more!

Left And Right – Charlie Puth, Jung Kook of BTS

So automatically anything BTS is likely to get social media into a frenzy. Charlie Puth once had that power but over the years his singles haven’t quite reached the levels they once did. Will that change with a collaboration with Jung Kook from BTS? I’m happy to say not only will the track bring in the likes and views but will also bring in the listeners as “Left And Right” is perhaps Puth’s strongest single in years. It helps that Puth and Kook nicely bounce off each other. While on paper this should feel gimmicky, it actually doesn’t. I hope once the initial buzz fade, the track gets the respect it deserves and it gets reflected on the charts with a long reign at the top.
