#HitsOfTomorrow: A Weekly Rundown Of The ‘Should-Be’ Hits

Beyond The Weeknd’s lackluster collaboration with Madonna and Playboi Carti for ‘The Idol,’ we look at the songs more deserving of airplay, from Dominic Fike to Ty Dolla $ign to Jelly Roll and more

It’s June! We’re nearly halfway through the 2023 year and the hits keep coming! After the massive success of his collaboration with Shakira, Bizarrap returns with his next session, this time with breakout global star Peso Pluma. Their “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 55” is likely to trend similarly to Shakira’s monster hit, proving again that Pluma is here to stay.

Speaking of collabs, this weekend we also get one of the most unexpected but exciting though slightly underwhelming if you ask me. As time gets nearer till the premier of The Weeknd’s series The Idol, another single from the series drops. “Popular” features the megastar alongside Playboi Carti and Madonna! It’s a bit surprising to hear this collab between two of the biggest stars of their respective eras coming together for a slightly boring single like this. The Weeknd has gone on record as saying he’s always wanted to make an album with/for Madonna and here’s hoping this track gets that started but also is not the direction they take. Madonna is likely to get a 1-2 punch of hits this summer thanks to this track and the upcoming collaboration with Sam Smith – “Vulgar” – that actually drops next week.

Beyond these collaborations this week, many tracks are in the running to play through our summer playlists and beyond. So without further ado, let’s get to the songs that deserve our little extra attention –   the SHOULD-BE hits of the week. Here is this week’s #HitsOfTomorrow

“Mona Lisa” – Dominic Fike

The box office is already set ablaze this weekend with the release of Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse. While the first animated Spiderman film went on to win an Oscar, it also left behind a mammoth musical legacy that is “Sunflower” – the Post Malone/Swae Lee collab that hit Number One and has generated billions of streams. Dominic Fike has been on the rise for quite some time now and while “Mona Lisa” may not seem like the traditional monster hit from a soundtrack, it has all the right ingredients to keep us singing along this entire summer. The track is stronger than anything released yet from the Barbie film or The Idol, here’s hoping by the end of this summer, Fike is a household name.

“Motion” – Ty Dolla $ign

Ty Dolla $ign has always been open to experimentation and he’s never shied away from collabs with pop artists. So it’s a delightful summer surprise that he’s just dropped “Motion,” arguably his most pop single ever and he’s not the guest feature – this is all him! The song will instantly make you move and not since Snoop Dogg has a rapper been able to so easily groove without it feeling forced or piggybacking a trend. It’s about time $ign delivered a massive Top 40 hit all on his own. You simply can’t not move to this.

“House For Kings” – Sam Feldt, Tones And I

Tones And I have struggled after the massive success of “Dance Monkey.” While many tracks have tried to match that success or at least create a positive trajectory, I feel there sadly haven’t been any standouts. I hope that changes with “House For Kings,” the collab with ace producer Sam Feldt, who always manages to make a bop. The single is perfect for Top 40 and the vocals here add the gravitas needed to separate the single from just another EDM release to a bona fide crossover hit. I really hope a killer music video is on the way, ‘cause the track deserves it!

“Rakata” – The Jungle Giants, RENEE

“Rakata” is a bilingual collaboration between The Jungle Giants and RENEE that works from the get-go. The single is an ode to Mexico and it shows as the single is vibrant, full of energy and there is a synergy between the two acts that makes the song not feel gimmicky but rather like a breath of fresh air. The Australian band really hasn’t had a colossal global hit yet and I think this could be the one. Here’s hoping the English/Spanish jam makes it mark on crossover stations and quickly becomes a summer mainstay on the global charts!

“Halfway To Hell” – Jelly Roll

Nashville native Jelly Roll is having a moment and his LP Whitsitt Chapel is just exactly what we’ve been missing with this country/rock/hip-hop crossover genre that has made stars out of Morgan Wallen and HARDY. The latter actually is co-writer on the album and that should come as no surprise. But it’s the album opener, “Halfway To Hell” that screams massive Top 40 crossover hit potential. The single could fit on a rock station from 1980, an alternative rock station from 1993 to country and pop stations of today. Timeless and timely, this is a single that works bigly. If this album isn’t huge and this song not a hit, I honestly will feel like programmers and publicists simply don’t deserve to do what they do. SMASH for the ages!

Even More Hits!

“The Other POV” – Khloe Rose

“Stay” – PHABO, Arin Ray

“Bad At Us” – xooos

“Walk Away” – Una Healy
