#HitsOfTomorrow – A Weekly Rundown of the ‘Should-Be’ Hits

From Budjerah to BENEE, Tove Lo and Jessie Ware, among other artists

Rolling Stone India - Google News

It’s been quite the week in music with the annual Grammy Awards being held and among the many things that happened on music’s biggest night, a whole new generation collectively learned who Bonnie Raitt is!

Having said that, while the debates will continue about the worthiness of the winners, one universally applauded Grammy recipient was Lizzo, whose genuine shock and then heartfelt speech upon winning Record Of The Year for “About Damn Time” turned even haters into believers. She’s capitalizing on that win by featuring a new mix of her single “Special” that features artist du jour SZA. The 2023 updated mix is likely to zoom up the charts and the empowering lyrics will likely further complement the tone of the speech that made it go viral.

Beyond Lizzo and SZA, we’ve got more collab singles this week that likely will impact the charts strongly. These include Dove Cameron and Khalid coming together for “We Go Down Together,” Jason Derulo working with David Guetta for “Saturday/Sunday,” Jax Jones and Calum Scott joining forces for “Whistle” and finally, Logic and Norah Jones joining hands for “Paradise II.”

Having said that, the world is now gearing up for the Super Bowl and the long-awaited return of Rihanna at the halftime show! Before we see her shine bright like a “diamond” again, here are this week’s HITS OF TOMORROW, the should-be hits that deserve our extra little attention.

“Green Honda” – BENEE

Slowly but surely New Zealander BENEE has been making a global impact thanks to hits like “Supalonely” featuring Gus Dapperton and “Glitter.” But with “Green Honda,” the young singer may just be giving us her most universal hit till date. Based on her actual car she named ‘Steve,’ the up-tempo track steers you on a joyous journey where you can be just be yourself and fear has no room in the car. Programmers across the globe will be silly not to push the single into heavy rotation as radio is sorely missing lighter fare that keeps you going while driving!

“Borderline” – Tove Lo

It’s really difficult for Tove Lo to do wrong and after giving us the fantastic Dirt Femme LP just last fall, she returns with the single “Borderline,” a song she co-wrote with Dua Lipa! Yup, the two already had collaborated back when Lipa was recording her Future Nostalgia record and Lo is even credited for the single “Cool” from that album. The two actually wrote “Borderline” together at the “very start of our friendship,” as Lo wrote on social media. The single is yet another infectiously catchy bop from Lo and at a time when so many songs have the disco-laced sound pat down, very few are actually as melodically solid as this. Lo hasn’t really had that big, big hit in quite some time and hopefully this single becomes Top 10 global hit it deserves to be!

“late night thoughts” – Shy Martin

Up-and-coming Swedish pop star Shy Martin is finally ready to release her debut LP, late night thoughts. The title track showcases the solid vocals Martin exudes but there is a trippy multi-genre-hopping feel to the song that makes it both irresistibly current and a shoe-in for a massive Top 40 hit. Hopefully the powers-to-be don’t get shy with us because this is a song that sounds so damn good on radio and “late night thoughts” is a perfect addition to any playlist right now.

“Therapy” – Budjerah

While Australia has shown their love for Budjerah, the global pop market has no idea what they’ve been missing out on. That should soon change with “Therapy,” the soulful singer’s most instantly hit-worthy release. The single feels almost too perfect for social media thanks to its brilliant chorus, but it’s Budjerah’s vocals that soar here creating for a single that should likely make the star a global name. Honestly, you don’t get to open for Ed Sheeran if you aren’t a big-ass deal. Please radio, take notice!

“Moving On” – ARIZONA

ARIZONA have been long time faves of many, it’s the only reason they’ve reached over a billion streams for their discography. But for some reason, the electro-pop trio has failed to give Top 40 that big hit that would separate them from many who share space with them in this genre. “Moving On” is the kind of anthemic single that screams ‘hit’ and the big pop hooks make for probably one of the band’s strongest singles ever. If there’s any justice in the world, we’ll hear this regularly across playlists and the single will not just be relegated to any one genre. It’s just too good to be ignored.

“Pearls” – Jessie Ware

One additional shout-out this week has to go to Jessie Ware who announced, alongside the debut of the single “Pearls,” that her next LP titled That! Feels Good! is almost ready. Don’t let the Shania Twain-like album title fool you into believing that Ware is anywhere but on the dance floor, as the first single finds the talent shining as bright as ever at the disco. Ware easily builds into her upper range, making this a track that feels like an anthem for the ages. In many ways, while the brilliant What’s Your Pleasure LP had the singer giving us mood and midnight vibes at the club, she’s much more herself here; less character and more her… and we’re loving it!
