#HitsOftomorrow – A Weekly Rundown of the “Should-Be” Hits

Hello November! We are reaching the penultimate month of 2022 and as radio switches over to holiday music now and we begin to start putting together our best-of lists for the year, artists are still vying for our attention before the year ends.

After the massive first-week sales and broken Billboard records that Taylor Swift managed with Midnights, the industry’s other favorite golden child Drake is back, this time with 21 Savage on a collab album that’s likely to break some streaming records too. Her Loss features 16 tracks with highlights being “Broke Boys,” “More M’s” and the album closer, “I Guess It’s Fuck Me.”

While no other album will be as big this week, except perhaps Joji with SMITHEREENS, we do have a big new single release from Selena Gomez with “My Mind And Me,” taken from her just-released Apple TV+ documentary. Both efforts are likely to be winners for the months to come.

Meanwhile, without further ado, here are this week’s Hits Of Tomorrow – the should-be hits of the current week that deserve that extra little bit of attention.

“Never Be The One” – Olivia O’Brien

Olivia O’Brien is off to a great start with the first single from her next ‘Micro Mixtape’ series. “Never Be The One” is a perfect bop for this season, catchy and with retro-spritzed production. The artist has been bubbling under for some time now and the single really offers O’Brien the opportunity to break out from crowd and deliver a massive Top-40 single that we’ll keep singing into 2023. This is a winner all the way.

“Heart Attack” – Cavetown

We haven’t had a full-length album from Cavetown since 2020’s sleepyhead and the new album, worm food, continues the trajectory the British singer-songwriter has set for himself and his fans of offering warmth and melancholy over inspired lyrics and contemporary production. “Heart Attack” is one of the standout tracks from the set and really could become a playlist regular and even a staple on radio, as it deserves to be!

“Covering My Ears” – M24, wewantwraiths, Naughty Boy

South London drill rapper M24 is back and this time brings the melody along courtesy of a guest chorus from wewantwraiths. The track samples Naughty Boy’s now classic “La La La,” featuring Sam Smith, to perfection. “Covering My Ears” is quite possibly the most Top 40-ready track to emerge of late from the slew of drip rap releases thanks to the instantly recognizable sample. Given that nostalgia is taking less and less time to resurface, there’s no reason why the single shouldn’t break out from just the UK scene into becoming a global smash, much like the original. 

“Feel Like That” – Goddard, Charlotte Haining

Drum and bass continues to be underserved as a style in the Top 40 landscape but every once in a while, a melodic track surfaces that fits the genre but also fits the contemporary landscape of what else is playing on the radio. Such is the case for Goddard’s “Feel Like That” featuring vocals from Charlotte Haining. The single is the type of dance smash that used to have no challenge bursting onto the mainstream charts. Let’s hope that’s the case here again and the single gets the recognition it deserves.

“Say You Want Me” – Masego

Jamaican-American Masego has always had the pulse on what’s hip and what works. So it’s no surprise that his first single from his new era, “Say You Want Me,” is a banger!

The artist has spent a lot of time building up a fan base used to his sultry vocals and lyrics, but here he’s not only continuing with that trend, but he also infuses a more global feel that elevates the track from feeling typecast to more Top 40-ready. The track deserves to make its mark on the charts and frankly, any playlist without this single this fall will feel a little less fun.
