The number of new releases has been slow this week, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have a few gems from the likes of Cigarettes After Sex
After what feels like an avalanche of new music over the past few weeks, the new releases this week fail short of big, big names, but that doesn’t mean the quality of the tracks released have gone down. In fact, in many ways, when there is a little more space for new singles to breathe, the chances of a breakout single are higher. So, here’s wishing this week’s #HITSOFTOMORROW group the best of luck – shifting from should-be hits to breakout smashes!
How do you top off such a globally successful single as “Sunroof” that basically ruled the airwaves, streaming and social media all through 2022? Well, you basically tweak the winning formula a bit and release a single that is equally infectious, and which looks to move Nicky Youre from one-hit-wonder status to a bonafide star. “Eyes On You” has everything bright and California about it, and can serve as the perfect warm antidote to the upcoming cold months. Without a feature, this is Youre’s first chance to really stand out and be celebrated as an artist on his own right, and here’s hoping we continue to keep our eyes on and ears open to listening to him!
Indonesian rapper Rich Brian has been making waves over the past few years ever since his viral hit in 2016 “Dat $tick”released. Along the way he’s been upping his rap game and worked with biggies from K-pop and also North America. His feature on “Edamame” with bbno$ even featured in my year-end ‘Top 100 of 2021.’ So it’s nice to see Brian get top billing on “Vivid,” a super-catchy smash waiting to happen. The joy in listening to Brian has always been in his natural flow without forced lyrical content outside his world, and the latest single continues that authentic trend and honestly, this track featuring $NOT has the potential to be a breakout hit on the charts for the talent and could become as big as his collab from last year.
Texas-natives Cigarettes After Sex return with another dreamy winner, “Pistol.” The single is just the kind of welcome return for the band that’s been MIA for the past couple of years and fans have been waiting long for their return. The single boasts the same kind of energy we get from The 1975 and like them, here’s hoping the track becomes not just soundtrack-bait but the perfect option for programmers this upcoming winter as a mainstream dream-pop record. How good this would sound blasting from the radio on a late-night drive!
JP Saxe has always had a way with words and “The Good Parts” is no different. It’s hard to be upbeat after a breakup, but the lyrics here are golden as Saxe reflects on the “good parts” of said relationship and emphasises that life can go on without carrying more resentment or baggage as a result. The song really deserves to be a hit on radio and across streaming platforms as we don’t often get such well-crafted and well-meaning tracks these days.
“I Wish You Loved Me” is the kind of alternative pop hit that in the 1990s and even upto early 2000s would have been a guaranteed crossover mainstream Top 10 hit! Oh, how times have changed .The song is quite possibly the band’s best effort yet and while they’ve accumulated quite the following, the charts haven’t necessarily reflected that. If there’s any luck, this track will explode at radio and streaming beyond just TikTok. Nightly is an exciting band to follow at the moment and I’m hoping AND wishing everyone loved this track the way I do!
