Check out our list that includes old favorites such as The National and fresh faces such as Adi Oasis
As August wraps up, we’re nearing the end of summer, but that doesn’t mean the hits have stopped pouring out. This week sees the return of Britney Spears as she joins legend Elton John on his updated take on “Tiny Dancer,” titled “Hold Me Closer.” Will the track reach the heights that the legend’s collab with Dua Lipa reached last year? Likely not, but Britney fans have wanted to hear new music and this will likely satiate their appetites till there is new original music. Beyond this collaboration, the king of hip-hop collabs DJ Khaled has released his latest album “God Did” where he gets everyone working together, from Kanye West with Eminem to Future with SZA on what’s likely to be the album’s biggest hit, “Beautiful”.
Without further ado, here is this week’s #HitsOfTomorrow, should-be hits from the past seven days that require that little extra nudge to get the attention they deserve.
Brit soul’s underrated MVP James Vickery returns with what might be his finest single, and if there is any justice in the world, the singer will not only score a major hit in his own country but the track will also become a true R&B staple for the year across the globe. Vickery oozes old-school soul here as he croons like the best of them. Produced by Fred Cox, the single is the perfect step in the next chapter of the talent’s career. Winner for the ages.
British singer-songwriter Banners returns with the melancholic single “Happier,” quite possibly the most upbeat track contemplating a separation. It’s honest and the lyrics create the perfect juxtaposition to the composition, making for a memorable single that hopefully picks up steam thanks to being included in numerous fall playlists and, of course, on radio. Banners has been an artist to watch for some time now and it wouldn’t make me happier to see the song soar on the charts!
Neo-soul really hasn’t anointed very many new fresh faces of late, but Adi Oasis has been successful at creating a niche for herself and with this collaboration with Jamila Woods, “Red To Violet” becomes the perfect 2022 update for a style and sound that really never goes out of style. The track itself may be an ode to women of color according to the French-Caribbean artist, but the truth is, the song will have universal appeal and the laid-back feel of the single makes for the perfect addition to countless playlists and ideally for radio. Remember the days when Top 40 played India Arie and Erykah Badu too? Here’s hoping Adi Oasis can bring in a wave of that power back onto the charts again.
Prior to the release of their “Mercurial World Deluxe” in September, LA’s Magdalena Bay have previewed “All You Do” this week. The single offers another introduction to the duo who have turned their electro-pop sound into a style of its own. Here, the smooth vocals and the infectious melody make for a single that feels like comfort food and ethereal fantasy at the same time. If programmers take notice, the single will soar on radio as it will fit perfectly into any eclectic Top 40 playlist.
The ’80s continue to provide inspiration and this time, The Midnight take their turn with the touching ballad, “Heart Worth Breaking.” The song that depicts the love story of a small-town couple with their lives ahead of them is just the kind of track to catapult the duo from the success they’ve mostly had on the electronic charts to Top 40 radio. Lyrically, the song is gold and if it reaches the right audience, this can be a massive hit. Very excited for their upcoming album Heroes and the direction The Midnight is taking creatively as they conclude the album trilogy.
The National have been touring all summer and previewing the track ‘Weird Goodbyes,” but they’ve now finally released the track as their first official single of 2022, a collaboration with Bon Iver. The song lyrically focuses on the act of letting go of the past but then wondering if it was the right decision – making for a reflective single, one that should resonate quickly with old fans and hopefully with new fans who’ve never necessarily given The National the mainstream success they frankly are long overdue. In many ways, “Weird Goodbyes” might be the most contemporary recording the band has released and it really wouldn’t be a far stretch to hear the track on Top 40 playlists. Here’s hoping!
A Special Note!
As one small self-congratulatory note, we are delighted to see Rema release a new version of “Calm Down” featuring none other than Selena Gomez this week! The inclusion of the pop star elevates the track further into mainstream consciousness and we are thrilled that our pick from February 12th, 2002 (https://rollingstoneindia.com/hitsoftomorrow-diplo-miguel-busta-rhymes-lion-babe-odesza-bettye-lavette/) is now enjoying such success across the globe!
