#HitsOfTomorrow: A Weekly Rundown Of The ‘Should-Be’ Hits ft Justice and Tame Impala, Brittany Howard and More

January is wrapping up fairly quickly but a slew of singles are out this week that range in quality from fantastic to farts.

Justin Timberlake returns with “Selfish,” his first single since he took a public berating courtesy of the times (and Britney’s best-selling memoir). While the single will likely climb the charts, it will be interesting to see if the star still holds power on Top 40 without a guest feature or a particularly great song.

Similarly, both Ice Spice and Megan Thee Stallion go solo on their latest efforts “Think U The Shit (Fart)” and “HISS” respectively. While the latter has Stallion sounding more resilient than ever, Spice seems to be trying a bit too hard and the single fails to go beyond the novelty of its title. It may work to get listeners onboard initially but like many of her tracks, they just don’t have much repeat value.

The week also gives us new singles from The Kid LAROI with “Heaven” and Lil Nas X with “Where Do We Go Now” both of which are strangely enough co-written and produced by hitmakers Omer Fedi & Blake Slatkin. The two tracks feel part of the same universe and I’m wondering if Top 40 will be open to play both tracks or which artist will come out on top.

While we see which track radio embraces, let’s get things going with the SHOULD-BE hits – the ones that deserve to join the above-mentioned on the charts. Here are this week’s HITS OF TOMORROW. 

“ONE NIGHT/ALL NIGHT” – Justice, Tame Impala

An 8-year wait and we get disco-house that hits us harder than we ever thought we needed and yup, we love it!

“LEAD ME ON” – FLETCHER

Heartbreaking or hopeful, “Lead Me On” is the perfect lead single for FLETCHER’s sophomore era.

“EVERYBODY KNOWS I’M HIGH” – SHAED

Most instantly infectiously-catchy single the band has put out in years!

“SHAPE OF ME” – RITA ORA, KEITH URBAN

Ora & Urban shouldn’t blend as well as they do here but it continues to prove that Ora is pop’s most undervalued soundshifter.

“SPITE” – CHARLOTTE SANDS

The perfect pop/rock bop that Top 40 has been sorely missing.

“KITE” – BENJAMIN INGROSSO

Feel-good Swedish pop meets a retro soul vibe helps to create one of the best songs of 2024 so far.

“PROVE IT TO YOU” – BRITTANY HOWARD

Sonically the track may be unlike anything we’ve heard from Howard but her vocals as always are first-rate.

“SIMPLE THINGS” – EMOTIONAL ORANGES, NONSO AMADI

The two acts’ fusion of styles created a superb collab EP and “Simple Things” is an immediate standout.

“SAY SOMETHING” – SINEAD HARNETT

Harnett has perhaps never sounded this ethereal before and we just can’t rave enough.
