#HitsOfTomorrow: A Weekly Rundown Of The ‘Should-Be’ Hits ft MGMT, Vassy and More
The new year brings repeat-worthy tracks from UMI and V of BTS, Spacey Jane, Declan J Donovan and others
2024 has already kicked off with a sonic bang! First column of the new year and two of the Top 40’s biggest acts, Ariana Grande and Lil Nas X both dropped their first singles from their new respective eras while an early 2000s icon Jennifer Lopez tries her best to stay relevant, will we dig it?
Grande, with a little help from Max Martin, gets her dance-pop groove back on with the deep house single “yes, and?”. The late 80s/early 90s sound matches up to the music video which gives us major Paula Abdul “Cold Hearted” vibes.
On the flip, Lil Nas X drops “J CHRIST,” a track aided by an instantly controversial title and corresponding music video. The track itself is just about okay with clear inspiration from Kendrick Lamar. X still delivers a hit, but it’s not the growth we would have hoped for from the artist.
Meanwhile, Jennifer Lopez makes fun of her multiple marriages and even throws in a nod to her famous/infamous “Jenny From The Block” in her new single “Can’t Get Enough.” It’s unabashedly pop and might as well have been released 20 years ago but that sound is very in right now, so will this “now” work? Hard to say, but happy to see that the entertainer is in on the joke!
As we didn’t have a column last week, this week’s column will feature tracks released over the past two weeks.
Without further ado, let’s get things started with the SHOULD-BE hits. Here are this week’s #HitsOfTomorrow.
“ONE BAD DAY” – Spacey Jane
Standalone single bridging the gap between the Aussie’s last album and the next one – but it’s a winner!
“HUNGRY HEART” – Declan J Donovan
Springsteen cover this is not, but it’s a banger that gets you singing along less than a minute in.
“NOTHING TO DECLARE” – MGMT
MGMT are criminally underrated and this track showcases why in the most organic of ways.
“OFF SWITCH” – VASSY
Unabashedly dance-pop, this is a single that works because Vassy makes us believe in love.
“HANG ME OUT TO DRY” – Kyle Dion
You can’t wash away the pain from Dion as he offers plenty of soul in this ode to unrequited love.
“ALIBI” – Ella Henderson, Rudimental
“Gangster’s Paradise” meets drum n’ bass with vocals from the amazing Ella Henderson – thank you Rudimental!
“wherever u r” – UMI, V (of BTS)
Soulful collab that works thanks to the earnestness of both artists.
“I TRIED A RING ON” – Tigirlily Gold
First (hopefully country crossover) breakup anthem of the year!
“GIRLS THAT PLAY” – Etta Marcus
Alt-pop girl power mantra deserves the legs to become a breakout hit!
