#HitsOfTomorrow: A Weekly Rundown Of The ‘Should-Be’ Hits
Beyond The Jonas Brothers’ ‘The Album,’ we look at must-hear rising releases from Janelle Monae, Joyner Lucas, Nothing But Thieves and more
Things are heating up as we are midway through May. While Priyanka Chopra Jonas is seemingly everywhere with her film, Love Again and her Amazon series Citadel, her husband, Nick Jonas is giving us new music along with his brothers. The Jonas Brothers have the big new album release this week with The Album LP. The album is a diverse affair, further pushing the musical limits of the band, making for a much more eclectic ride. Is it good? It’s a fun ride for the summer, but that’s about all we expected too, right?
Beyond the brothers, we also have the release of Lauren Daigle’s eponymous album which one could make the case is the contemporary Christian star’s Top 40 breakthrough release. We’ve not seen a huge CCM star get the naturally evolve like this since, say Amy Grant. And as we know, her album Heart In Motion ended up becoming one of the biggest releases of that year and spawned several Top 10 hits. Will that be the same case for Daigle? It’s possible as Top 40 radio has already given her a hit and if the label releases tracks like “These Are The Days” and “Valuable,” it’s likely Daigle will get the shelf space radio has left for Adele.
Some big single releases include the latest from Shakira (“Acrostico,”) 30 Seconds To Mars (“Stuck”) and a country mix of Ed Sheeran’s “Life Goes On” with Luke Combs. These will likely impact the charts instantly. But some tracks need that little extra attention. So here we go, the SHOULD-BE hits of the week. Here is this week’s #HitsOfTomorrow.
“Lipstick Lover” – Janelle Monae
Just before dropping her first album in nearly five years next month, Janelle Monae gives us “Lipstick Lover,” a reggae-tinged anthem that will likely not just become a staple for the queer community (her album The Age Of Pleasure fittingly drops during Pride month) but also could very well become one of the biggest hits of the summertime. While Monae has parlayed brilliantly into fashion and film, we shouldn’t forget her first love — music. The track is likely the start of brilliant sonic return by an artist we all know but lately haven’t heard from. This single is the perfect reintroduction and sounds like no other track on radio right now. A must add!
“Overcome” – Nothing But Thieves
Inspiration is often hard to come by and change can feel ever harder. Nothing But Thieves take this sentiment and give us the anthemic “Overcome,” a perfect single to prep us for their upcoming album Dead Club City. The single fits just right into the current Top 40 landscape and the band deserve to crack the Top 40 with this single that gets you moving, thinking and singing along by the second verse itself. Winner.
“Run Through Fire” – Pink Sweat$
Singer-songwriter Pink Sweat$ returns with one of the best singles he’s ever released, “Run Through Fire.” The ballad works big time because of the artist’s earnestness and vocal sincerity. The Philly native has still been bubbling under on the charts despite his strong social media presence and name recognition. While “At My Worst” had so far been his biggest hit, here’s hoping this single helps the artist to get that Top 40 global smash he deserves. This isn’t just a pretty single, it is what radio has been missing for a long time. Let’s hope folks get to hear it!
“Better On My Own” – Keisya Levronka
Already having amassed a number of strong singles from Levronka, Keisya Levronka finally releases her debut album. The LP has clearly saved the best for last as the single “Better On My Own” was left to release at the same time as the album and it is likely the track that will catapult the Indonesian singer into the global mainstream. Top 40 playlists should lap this single up if there is justice as the ballad is as strong as anything we have on the radio these days and Levronka is a breath of sonic fresh air we could use this summer. Smash!
“What’s That?” – Joyner Lucas
Already a two-time Grammy nominee and with a legion of fans and followers, Joyner Lucas has quickly become one of the most interesting rappers in recent time. That’s likely to gain even more traction with the release of “What’s That?” in advance of his upcoming LP Not Now, I’m Busy. The single showcases Lucas at his best, fact-checking some truths about himself (and his net worth) along the way. At a time when hip-hop all but ceases to exist at Top 40, Lucas would be a welcome presence on the charts as the rapper doesn’t need an Eighties hit to sample to get attention, he’s just that good.
Even More Hits!
