#HitsOfTomorrow: A Weekly Rundown Of The ‘Should-Be’ Hits

Beyond Ed Sheeran’s new album, we look at hot collabs between Le Sserafim and Nile Rodgers and more

Ed Sheeran seemingly graduates math class as he completes his arithmetic series with the album release of (aka Subtract). While the album isn’t as instantly “pop” as his previous efforts and has failed to generate a big hit single, that doesn’t mean the record isn’t a significant effort. In fact, I’d argue it’s his best album since his debut LP + (aka Plus).

Hopefully the more restrained and reflective effort will find a home on the charts and the lack of a flashy pop single will remind listeners that the singer-songwriter is capable of artistry and not just the hits.

Beyond the superstar, there are numerous collaborations this week that have us moving. As we’ve entered May, it seems many tracks are vying for our attention as potential jam(s) of the summer. So without further ado, let’s get to the songs that deserve our little extra attention –   the SHOULD-BE hits of the week. Here is this week’s #HitsOfTomorrow.

“Fool 4 U” – Galantis, JVKE, Enisa

Swedish DJ Duo Galantis and singer-songwriter JVKE already had a brush of success in 2021 with the single “Dandelion.” Now, the two acts come together again, this time with the support of singer-songwriter Enisa. The result is “Fool 4 U,” a feel-good EDM number that has everything required to not just become a massive club hit but breakthrough onto global Top 40 playlists too. This is what a summer smash should sound like! HIT!

“Oceans” – Gryffin, Kid Joi

Speaking of feel-good dance anthems to get us through the next few months, we get our next one courtesy of Gryffin. “Oceans” is an emotionally-charged single that benefits from the vocals of up-and-coming singer Kid Joi. The single flows melodically alongside the very euphoric house style, making for the absolute perfect banger for the warm months ahead seaside. At a time when there is so much banality in the EDM world, it’s been a refreshing one-two punch of Galantis and Gryffin this weekend making us hopeful for more exciting collaborations ahead!

“Unforgiven” – LE SSERAFIM, Nile Rodgers

While collabs seem to be the name of the game of late in K-pop, you have to hand it to the legendary Nile Rodgers who finally found his place in the genre alongside the ladies of LE SSERAFIM. Already a YouTube smash, the fivesome deliver on their UNFORGIVEN LP release. Of course, it’s the title track that is pure magic. With a clever sample of Ennio Morricone’s theme from the spaghetti western film The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, the track offers a “fearless” introduction to the artists and Rodgers’ presence makes all the stronger case to push the track out of the K-pop universe and into the global atmosphere. A smash on every continent!

“Traitor Joe” – Megan Moroney

2022 gave us a breakout country star in Megan Moroney but with the release of her debut album Lucky, we are likely to see the singer breakthrough onto the Top 40, especially with this single. “Traitor Joe” is classic storytelling, a joyous wordplay single if there ever was one (especially given the recent headlines about retailer Trader Joe’s and unions!). Moroney has a bright future ahead and at a time where mainstream radio is embracing country at an unprecedented level, here’s hoping programmers make room for some women, especially Moroney!

“Shit We Do For Love” – Icona Pop, Yaeger

While we wait for their sophomore album to drop, Icona Pop return with another instant classic, this time working alongside a #HitsOfTomorrow fave, Yaeger. “Shit We Do For Love” is an instant smash, one that I hope playlists, programmers and social media creators (damn, I can’t believe we’ve reached a point of giving that category equal emphasis!) take notice of, NOW. Icona Pop have always been able to get folks moving and singing along and this rave track is no different. We need more fun records on the radio and this is the answer!

Even More Hits!

“Co-Star” – Amaarae

“Buzzkill” – Leyla Blue

“Super Ego” – Babe Rainbow

“Backbone” – Blusher
