#HitsOfTomorrow: A Weekly Rundown Of The ‘Should-Be’ Hits

Attention please! That’s what Doja Cat is asking as she drops her latest single “Attention,” her first in 2023. After promising a change in musical directions, she certainly lives up to that promise with a Nineties hip-hop inspired track that goes hard. Cat proves that she’s not going to be boxed nor is she quietly going to go away despite the countless female rappers who have now become household names since she hit the scene.

Will radio embrace the track? It’s hard to say and the track is a grower and most of Cat’s recent fans have appreciated her pop and melodic sensibility before her rhymes. Here, the lyrics matter bigly and I certainly hope she’s built up enough cache in the past few years to let the song get its due on radio but in this day and age, it’s really hard to predict anything!

With that said, there’s a whole world of singles trying to vie for our attention! So without further ado, let’s get to the songs that deserve our little extra nudge – the SHOULD-BE hits of the week. Here are this week’s #HitsOfTomorrow. 

“Jah” – Libianca

So unless you’ve living under a shoe, 2023 has already been a stellar year for Libianca whose late 2022 release “People” has become a staple of radio nearly everywhere (of course, excluding the U.S. despite the fact she’s Cameroonian-American!). I didn’t get the chance to highlight that single as December was all about chronicling the year that had passed. But thankfully the singer’s single was noticed and boy has it. With everyone from Becky G to Omah Lay joining on collabs of the single, the song has become a smash. Now enough about that single, let’s talk about “Jah,” her follow-up single. The song is an empowering anthem where the artist gives flowers to God for being there even when life disappoints. The single is instantly infectious and for those rare places where the star hasn’t gotten her moment yet, here’s hoping this follow-up track does the trick. Winner!

“Clumsy Dancer” – Kanii

With the release of his EP exiit, Kanii gives us a spirited tracklist of potential hits but no single shines brighter than “Clumsy Dancer.” The single is a slow build but it is worth all the moves it takes to get there. While Top 40 may hesitate to pick up the song, this is a summer jam worth exploring and hopefully will get the attention of TikTok to make the interesting track into a crossover hit. I wouldn’t lie, the single would kill with the inclusion of a rap verse, in fact, it’s screaming for a remix. Hopefully Kanii’s team agrees and the track gets the love it absolutely could get it if marketed right!

“Same Again (For Love)” – Dagny

Perennially underrated Dagny is back with “Same Again (For Love)” and it is, as expected, a bop. The singer is always able to find melodic gold that makes every release feel both fresh and well, effortless. But the single is far from basic, Dagny has mastered the art of creating the perfect pop record and here’s hoping this summer, we don’t have the same thing happen again where her latest track gets overlooked by other more “conforming” artists. In a just world, Dagny and Carly Rae Jepsen among others would be atop the charts with every release because frankly, they are just that good!

“Get The Girl” – Seaforth

Clearly their newfound independence has done them well! Seaforth put out their first independent-release single “Get The Girl,” a smart country song that offers a melodic hook and an instantly memorable line “They tell you how to get the girl, but they don’t tell you how to get the girl back.” The duo has really delivered perhaps their best single yet and the track is coming out just at the right time that it could very easily crossover to Top 40 radio and become a much-deserved global smash. This is a winner, through and through.

“One Of These Things First” – Emeli Sande

So while technically “One Of These Things First” is a Nick Drake cover, Emeli Sande manages yet again to find a way to make any song her own. Originally released in 1971, the 50-year-old track feels fresh and continues its timeless legacy thanks to the Sande’s vocals which never go overboard and stay true to Drake’s folksiness. For a new generation, this will be their first introduction perhaps to the talented singer-songwriter and at a time while Sande’s career has seemingly stagnated at least commercially, this is a solid reminder to the industry that this woman’s talents are unparalleled and she really deserves all the love that comes her way!
