#HitsOfTomorrow – A Weekly Rundown Of The “Should-Be” Hits

This week’s list features genre-bending artists and unlikely collaborations

Published by

And we march right into March! Kali Uchis leads the way this week with her Red Moon In Venus LP, an album that is as entertaining as the artist is. Highlights include “Moral Conscience” and “Deserve Me” with Summer Walker (a smash in the waiting!).

Beyond the bilingual talent, we’ve got modern country god Morgan Wallen with his 36-track LP One Thing At A Time, an album with many crossover hits ready to happen; we’ve not seen this kind of potential since 1990s Shania Twain. Sure, he’s not really got much to say, but who cares when it sounds this good in your car, or rather, truck!

While these two albums will likely zoom up the charts, we’ve also got big new singles including the latest popular-sample-laden single from Nicki Minaj. This time “Red Ruby Da Sleeze” basically rips the “Diwali Riddim” beat to max benefit. Meanwhile Demi Lovato returns with “Still Alive,” the first official single from the Scream VI soundtrack (yeah, even I didn’t know this was a thing).

While none of these tracks likely need any more attention, here at HITS OF TOMORROW we’re giving you our picks for the best of other releases that might sneak under your radar but are all potential should-be hits! So without further ado, here goes! See you in March!

“On The Street” – j-hope, J. Cole

So BTS member j-hope and rapper J. Cole aren’t necessarily two names you’d ever have heard be put together in a sentence, let alone in a musical collab. But it is 2023 and nothing should surprise us. “On The Street” is quite possibly the best leap forward by any BTS member to legitimately break free of the K-pop boy-band image. j-hope succeeds in creating a sound and style that is uniquely his and J. Cole, one the genre’s greatest, finds a way to immerse himself into the track so seamlessly that you actually forget that they come from such different worlds. While j-hope preps for his military enlistment, here’s hoping this gem not only bolts him to the top of the charts across the globe but also is the start a bona-fide lasting solo career.

“Messed Up” – Holy Holy, Kwame

The rest of the world needs to wake up to the Australian duo Holy Holy who join forces with rapper/producer Kwame for the banger “Messed Up,” the kind of up-tempo record that truly deserves to be a global smash. You don’t really see indie dance and rap come together, but much like “On The Street” above, this is a collab that works because the worlds blend so beautifully together. While I usually hate the overuse of autotune, I like it here because the sound helps to blend the genres in a way that makes the song feel current but also relatable. Hit!

“Better Love” – Eliza Rose

After “B.O.T.A. (Baddest Of Them All)” – her smash #1 UK hit last year – Eliza Rose is back with an equally arresting hit that hopefully will cross over big time onto the global charts. “Better Love” is heavily influenced by the UK garage sound of yesteryear but with production by Mura Masa, there is a hipness here that makes the song and the sound transcend any genre or era. Another winner from the talented artist.

“Dummy” – Portugal. The Man

Not every great dance record makes you instantly want to dance. Of course, by the time you hit the first chorus and we hear singer John Baldwin Gourley command “1,2,3,4 / Everybody get on the dancefloor,” well, we’re moving right along. “Dummy” is the first single from Portugal. The Man’s ninth studio album, Chris Black Changed My Life. The single is a welcome return for the band and would fit literally into any playlist at the moment. Here’s hoping the single gets the same kind of long-term love the band got for “Feel It Still” just a few years back. Winner.

“Since I Have A Lover” – 6LACK

Alerting fans on rather short notice, rapper 6LACK returns with the title track “Since I Have A Lover” from his upcoming third LP (out later this month). The emotional single finds the artist yet again breaking the musical barriers of what is possible from the rapper. The single is both catchy and as ‘indie’ as a track can get. But that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t go big – this is a crossover hit in the waiting and no artist deserves that kind of breakout more than 6LACK, who continues to create music that speaks beyond genres.

Even More Hits!

SOFA KING – Royel Otis

WORMS – Ashnikko

PRETTIER THAN A BITCH – Baby Prince

SHADOW – Sonny Foderah, Lewis Thompson, MORGAN
