A weekly rundown of the ‘should-be’ hits featuring songs by Royel Otis, Maren Morris, Shae Universe, Delta Goodrem, Cosmo’s Midnight and more
This past week a lot of folks were saying “Yeah!” thanks to the ratings record-breaking Super Bowl halftime show featuring Usher. Of course, it has been a very busy week in new releases thanks to Beyonce dropping not one but two “country” singles on the same night.
While “TEXAS HOLD ‘EM” is the stronger of the two tracks, it will be interesting to see not just if country music stations play the track but also if Top 40 will actually play this. If they do, it will simply be because of the power of Beyonce.
One artist likely to instantly get picked up will be Mariah Carey as she joins the Ariana Grande Number One smash “yes, and?” It will be interesting to see how quickly stations switch from the original to this new mix which is frankly much stronger than the original thanks to Carey filling in the pockets with her usual bells and whistles, making for a much fuller track. Could this lead to a resurgence for the track and Carey get her history-making 20th Number One hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Time will tell.
Beyond these two formidable artists, we also finally see the release of Dua Lipa’s “Training Season.” Initially premiered at the Grammy Awards, Lipa is hoping her second track partnered up with Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker will be as successful if not more than “Houdini.” Lipa is definitely showcasing growth here but despite her continued evolution, the catchiness of her tracks just never seems to falter.
While all these tracks are likely to help continue the female chart domination we saw in 2023, let’s have a look at this week’s the #HITSOFTOMORROW, the SHOULD-BE hits of the week.
PS. A small footnote. This past week’s Billboard Hot 100 featured the Top 3 positions held by solo male artists respectively — Jack Harlow, Teddy Swims and Benson Boone held those positions. Given the slew of new releases that’s likely not to be the case again but make note, the tides are changing!
A superb interpolation of ‘Bleeding Love’ will be the USP for Karol G’s most immediate crossover hits.
Laidback but never lazy, this is a gem of a single that is simply just too damn catchy.
Covering Billy Idol and turning it quasi-country shouldn’t work but this is just lovely.
An instantly hypnotic slice of melodic dance that needs to go viral so it goes mainstream!
Goodrem’s vocals soar in this catchy Eighties Bonnie Tyler-esque number.
Sometimes a tender love song is just what we need and Moncrieff delivers.
Universe creates timeless R&B here that feels oh-so-current.
The track is yet another likely smash for this growing indie-disco subgenre!
Hayla’s vocals continue to elevate every club track into a potential Top 40 smash.
