#HitsOfTomorrow: A Weekly Rundown Of The ‘Should-Be’ Hits

Hear new music from Yaeger, DVBBS and a surprisingly refreshing TikTok-famous mashup of Britney Spears’ “Toxic” and Ginuwine’s “Pony”

Jan 22, 2022

2022 is leaving no stone behind in the first month itself. With new releases running the gamut from Charlie Puth to gayle and collaborations as diverse as Christina Aguilera & Ozuna to Internet Money & YoungBoy Never Broke Again as well as iann dior with Travis Barker and Machine Gun Kelly, there’s a lot of big releases. Of course, with this many biggies, there’s room for other tracks to get lost in the shuffle and here, we want to highlight those “should-be” hits!

“Don’t Text Me When You’re Drunk” – Stacey Ryan, Zai1k

Already a viral hit thanks to TikTok, “Don’t Text Me When You’re Drunk” by Stacey Ryan and Zai1k is actually a damn catchy song, more than any challenge, will lead you to believe and it’s great that the full-length single is now getting a push. James Gabriel, one of the song’s producers and writers credits fans of the app for inspiring him and the entire production team behind the single to “take a verse challenge and make it into a full blown record.” Ryan and Zai1k sound great together and there’s no reason radio won’t follow and turn this into a bona fide mainstream hit!

“See You Dance” – Yaeger

After her stellar appearance on Hayden James’ “Waiting For Nothing,” Yaeger is back with “See You Dance,” a thoughtful midtempo bop that feels likes a warm blanket. The comforting track is an empowering anthem of being there for one another. At a time when so many anthems focus on self-introspection, it’s a refreshing lyrical take for the singer to be motivating those around her to keep going…no matter what. The self-directed video further showcases embodies this necessary love.

“Wishful Thinking” – LÉON

Swedish singer-songwriter LÉON is back with the perfect slice of indie-pop. “Wishful Thinking” harkens back to the days of the mid to late Nineties when Sunny Colvin, Natalie Merchant and Paula Cole all scored bigtime crossover success at Top 40. With a melody reminiscent of “When The Stars Go Blue,” this is one of LÉON’s strongest solo singles to date and I really hope the track gets the attention it deserves!

“Find Love” – Hikaru Utada

Japanese-American Utada (as many remember her) is credited as Hikaru Utada this time on their latest album and the highlight single “Find Love.” It’s a welcome return for the singer who  came out as non-binary last summer and perhaps that newfound openness helps to make the music sound just a little more touching. While none of their English singles have charted as they once did more than a decade ago, if there’s a single that could change the direction again for the talented artist, it is “Find Love.” Universal in its message and production, “Find Love” is an out and out winner.

“When The Lights Go Down” – DVBBS, Galantis, Cody Simpson

Canadian duo DVBBS team up with Swedish duo Galantis and get Australian singer Cody Simpson on board for their fun collaboration “When The Lights Go Down.” Unlike many big DJ dance collab records, this one gets it right, combining just the right amount of production from both DJ duos and giving Simpson enough space not to sound generic. There actually could be repeat value to the single. If given the right push, this should crossover to Top 40 with ease and may just be the first step towards the now adult Simpson getting a real global presence again on radio.

BONUS: TikTok Mashup Of The Week

“Toxic Pony” – ALTEGO, Britney Spears, Ginuwine

TikTok has been working on overdrive of late it seems but while some mashups have just been blah or frankly excruciating, this one really works! In fact, with the official okay from both Britney Spears and Ginuwine themselves, “Toxic Pony” is a mashup for our times. Producer duo ALTEGO perfectly blend the two iconic songs together to create something nostalgic but also sorely missing from most of the Top 40 radio right now, something fun!

On the cusp…here are three more new releases we hope to see go far!

“Little Bit” – Marian Hill, GASHI

“3,2,1” – Michael Calfan, Nadia Ali

“Head On Fire” – Griff, Sigrid
