#HitsOfTomorrow: Swedish House Mafia, Josef Salvat, Majid Jordan, Agnes and More

Christina Aguilera joins hands with Becky G, Nicki Nicole and Nathy Peluso for her first Spanish song in two decades

Every week we’re going to take a look at some of the new and noteworthy singles just released that in a perfect world, should become the hits of tomorrow.

“MOTH TO A FLAME” – Swedish House Mafia (with The Weeknd)

Swedish House Mafia has seemingly made a grand comeback this year already with the hit “Lifetime” featuring Ty Dolla $ign and 070 Shake. So why not step it up a notch further then by collaborating with one of the world’s biggest superstars for “Moth To A Flame.” The Weeknd comes on board for what we’d have thought was a surefire hit. But “Take My Breath” underperformed and there might be a bit of overkill to this particular sound and the artist’s vocals (likely because radio is stilling playing “Blinding Lights”!) So even though it’s a solid track there’s no guarantee the song will become a radio staple which is a shame. Come on radio, move his older singles to recurrent status and play the new stuff!

“THE DRUM” – Josef Salvat

Consistently underrated, the Australian is back with, in his words, a “playfully sardonic” second single from his upcoming third album Islands. “The Drum” was written the day after Bowie died, he tweeted. “His passing was an inspiration both melodically and lyrically.” It shows as the song perfectly fits the current retro vibe that’s been thriving on Top 40 lately. If all went as it deserved, this song would be a global crossover hit for the artist.

“STARS ALIGN” – Majid Jordan (with Drake)

After they created magic together on what many consider one of Drake’s finest hits “Hold On We’re Going Home,” here the rapper supports Majid Jordan on “Stars Align.” The classic R&B-tinged jam has all the bells and whistles we’d expect for the single to become a hit. But it’s likely to do well only at R&B and Adult R&B unless there’s a strong music video and push by the hitmaker. The song may not reach the heights of their previous collaboration but it definitely deserves to be a hit.

“PA MIS MUCHACHAS” – Christina Aguilera (with Becky G, Nicki Nicole & Nathy Peluso)

21 years after her last Spanish album, Xtina has come with her own Latinx “Lady Marmalade” posse for this surprisingly current but not-trying-to-be-hip single “Pa Mis Muchachas.” Aided by some of the brightest young female talents in the game, the song does a fine job straddling the pop star and her infamous vocal histrionics with the sensuous groove. Far stronger than most of her latest English outings, here’s hoping the single helps the singer revive the commercial drop she’d been experiencing over the past few years and actually gets that much deserved comeback.

“LOVE AND APPRECIATION” – Agnes

Agnes started off as Leona Lewis-lite but her Swedish upbringing always propelled her beyond the Brit and her penchant for schmaltz. “Love And Appreciation” follows the singer’s “24 Hours,” another disco-floor ready retro jam. While it may be the end of 2021, the song ups the nostalgia and the record could easily fit on any ABBA record from the late Seventies, and we’re not complaining.

On the cusp…here are three more new releases we hope to see go far!

“TIDES” – Bonobo, Jamila Woods

“HALFWAY” – Mimi Webb

“SAY NOTHING” – Wes Nelson
