Beyond Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion's so-so new collab, we look at hit-worthy songs from RIIZE, Buju Banton ft Victoria Monet, Kamille and more

“Bongos” is here! Cardi B and Meghan Thee Stallion reunite to give us one last summer jam. The Latin-tinged single is no “WAP.” In fact, it’s a completely different vibe. Is that a good thing? Well, honestly, probably not. The song is no “WAP” but was that even really a possibility? The song is 100 percent helped by the music video where the two rappers have literally drummed up a visual feast but musically speaking, this is one of the weakest rap collabs we’ve heard this year and it is a major disappointment to see the two talents come together again and serve us this.
The same cannot be said for Olivia Rodrigo who gives us GUTS, her follow-up LP to Sour and let’s just say the artist has defeated the sophomore slump that many instant hit artists fall prey to. Rodrigo knows her lane but also knows how to evolve without it feeling unnatural and overproduced. The album is quite possibly even better than her debut, here’s hoping the LP carries the same legs that its predecessor did! Besides the already released “Vampire,” look out for “Get Him Back!” and “All American Bitch” – easily the top highlights of the album and hopefully future singles from the set.
Beyond these surefire hits, there are plenty of songs that deserve a little more attention – the SHOULD-BE hits if you will. Here are this week’s #HitsOfTomorrow.
She may not be a household name as an artist herself but Kamille has already been part of some of the biggest hits of the last decade. Most recently, we just heard her songwriting chops behind Kylie Minogue’s latest single “Tension” which was just featured last week on the column. Releasing her K1 LP – the album is full of hits that other artists only wished they got their hands on. The self-released album is a winner and here’s hoping all the big acts who have utilized her talent show their love and promote the album because it’s a winner all the way.
The highlight of the album is “Don’t Waste My Time,” a smash if you ever heard one. This MUST be pushed to radio as it is a worldwide hit waiting to happen. There are far too many talented songwriters who aren’t getting their moment as recording artists themselves. Kamille deserves all of our attention!
One of Kamille’s biggest songwriting success stories was her work over the years with Little Mix and Leigh-Anne has so far indicated that her solo releases will showcase a sonic diversity. “My Love” continues that trend as she teams up with Ayra Starr. The Afro-pop single feels rather natural as opposed to a calculated choice and the two work wonders together. While “Don’t Say Love” was a great intro to her solo career, this single is likely to explode and potentially has the power to become a global hit! We love.
Three acts that I never really would have thought would organically come together have done just that. “Something On My Mind” features Purple Disco Machine who blends his disco vibes with the electronic soul of Duke Dumont and then paired with the indie sensibility of Nothing But Thieves, the track becomes a perfect blend. There are so many dance collabs coming out these days yet this one feels special, not just because of the interesting pairing but because it feels like all the parts are equal in the equation and fans of any of the three artists will dig – that’s not easy to accomplish but here, it works!
Victoria Monet returns the favor after having had Buju Banton feature on her single “Party Girls.” “Body Touching Body” is the highlight from Banton’s just released Born For Greatness LP and the reggae star knows exactly how to make the single pop with Monet garnishing the sensual track with a whole another level of otherworldliness. Initially we didn’t quite think this pairing would work but the two have struck gold twice now. Here’s hoping the single benefits from the recent praise Monet has been getting for her Jaguar II era. Underrated for years, this is another track that doesn’t disappoint!
Hearing “Get A Guitar” you’d think this was NOT the debut outing for K-pop band RIIZE. This is what the genre is all about – giving us bops we can groove along to and the pop sentiment is so strong that it seamlessly crosses over into the mainstream without any real push. The single is infectiously catchy and at a time when we are waiting for another band to take the mantle from BTS, perhaps no one would have thought it might be a new band that manages that level of charisma, charm and hopefully, a chartbuster! Winner!
