On the first day of their five-hour practice session for the Rolling Stone Jam Sessions at the Jack Daniel’s Annual Rock Awards, Rohan Mazumdar, vocalist/guitarist of alt rock band The Colour Compound, found himself surprisingly at ease at the well-lit and spacious Cotton Press Studio in Mumbai.

“Everyone there made it easy for the other person and there were no egos at all,” says Mazumdar, adding that this is not the first time he’s jamming with 12 artists who will share the stage for the Rolling Stone Jam Sessions on February 22nd at the Jack Daniel’s Annual Rock Awards. “I was part of [jam/alternative band] Something Relevant for some time, which had about 13 people when I was there,” he says.

At the practice session, STR’s keyboardist Luis Chico filled in on electronic synth and keyboard, while two drumkits were set up for Virendra Kaith [from metal bands like Scribe and Demonic Resurrection] and Aditya Ashok [drum and bass artist Ox7gen]. Bassist Krishna Jhaveri of alt metal band Goddess Gagged and guitarists Aviv Pereira [of alt rock band Split and this year’s JD Rock Award nominees Split] and Bradley Tellis [from the Mumbai alt rock band, The Colour Compound] were the main instrumentalists, who were also roped in to rework well-known tracks by some of the biggest Indian rock bands.

To top it off, the lineup of vocalists performing at the big jam will include singer-songwriter Siddharth Basrur, Suman Sridhar from jazz/punk/pop duo Sridhar/Thayil, singer-songwriter Rachel Varghese and Split vocalist Garreth D’Mello. D’Mello, who was in the middle of nailing one of his favorite Indian rock songs during the rehearsals, said: “I don’t think anyone’s excited about hearing straight covers. We got them right at first, but we’ve decided to fool around with the songs at the gig.”

The tally of artists who will be jamming at JD Rock Awards 2013 is likely to go up, but we’ll leave some surprises, including the setlist, for the stage.
